We are currently recruiting for a Structural Design Engineer to join a leading marine manufacturing organisation based in Hampshire. The successful candidate will become a key member of the structural engineering team, supporting yachts currently in build while also contributing to the design and development of new structural components and tooling. The role will involve working closely with production, design and quality teams to ensure structural designs are delivered accurately and efficiently, supporting both ongoing builds and future product development. This position offers the opportunity to work within a highly technical environment with involvement across design, structural analysis, production support and continuous improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Production Support
- Provide engineering support to the shop floor on yachts currently in build.
- Assist with drawing clarification and potential in-build design modifications.
- Attend production and project meetings to remain aligned with build progress and contract changes.
- Produce 3D assembly models and production drawings for structural components and new product development using parametric modelling software (training provided).
- Design and develop tooling components with a focus on improving build repeatability and manufacturing accuracy.
- Deliver structural component designs from concept through to production, including calculations and detailed drawings for the shop floor.
- Assist with first-principle structural calculations using internal tools and engineering spreadsheets.
- Support classification society structural calculations where required.
- Design material test samples, coordinate testing, and prepare technical reports on results.
- Review internal and independent yacht surveys and assist in the preparation of technical reports alongside the quality team.
- Contribute to ongoing improvements across manufacturing processes, structural design practices, and materials.
Knowledge
- Understanding of composite construction materials including polyester, vinylester and epoxy.
- Knowledge of resin infusion techniques is advantageous.
- Understanding of yacht systems and marine structures.
- Interest in sailing and yacht design is desirable.
- Experience working with suppliers or managing supplier relationships is beneficial.
Skills
- Strong CAD and technical software skills, including:
- AutoCAD
- Parametric 3D modelling software (training provided)
- Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
Experience
- Experience within a marine design consultancy or boatbuilding/manufacturing environment.
- Background supporting yacht production or composite structural design.
- Experience working within a production or manufacturing environment is desirable.
Qualifications
- Degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Structural Engineering or similar.
- Approximately 2–5 years’ experience in marine composite design.
