- Interim Head of Compliance β Mortgages | UK Lender | SMF16 | Hands-On
- We're partnering with an established UK mortgage lender to appoint an
Interim Head of Compliance on a hands-on basis.
This is a delivery role, not a figurehead one - you'll roll your sleeves up, own the compliance agenda directly, and move at pace.
The client needs someone in quickly to get under the bonnet of the control environment and provide senior compliance leadership through a period of strategic change.
The role
Reporting into senior management and holding
SMF16 (Compliance Oversight) , you'll take ownership of the firm's regulatory compliance framework across its prime and specialist residential lending book.
The immediate priority is a rapid, robust review of the control environment, alongside providing sharp, pragmatic compliance advice as the business works through a set of significant strategic questions in the current rate environment.
This is a genuinely hands-on mandate - closer to the detail than a large-team oversight role.
You'll be the person doing the thinking and the doing, not managing a big function from a distance.
Key responsibilities
- Hold
SMF16 and act as the senior compliance point of contact, with personal accountability for the firm's compliance with FCA rules.
- Lead an urgent review of the control environment, identifying gaps, prioritising remediation and strengthening the framework at pace.
- Provide clear, commercially-minded compliance advisory support to the executive on strategic and change initiatives.
- Own compliance oversight and monitoring across the residential mortgage book, ensuring adherence to
- MCOB ,
Consumer Duty and wider FCA obligations.
- Embed and evidence Consumer Duty outcomes across products, pricing, and customer treatment.
- Oversee data privacy and data protection obligations, ensuring UK GDPR and related controls are effective and appropriately governed.
- Develop and maintain policies, procedures and governance controls, and report significant compliance risks and exposures to senior management and the Board.
What we're looking for
- Proven senior compliance experience gained within a mortgage lender
- specialist residential and/or prime - rather than a broker or intermediary background.
SMF16 approved or clearly approvable , with strong working knowledge of MCOB, Consumer Duty and the SM&CR regime.
- A genuine hands-on operator who is comfortable in the detail and can deliver from day one.
- Strong grounding in compliance advisory, oversight and monitoring, with the credibility to challenge and support senior stakeholders.
- Solid data privacy / data protection knowledge.
Desirable
first-line risk and controls experience;
SMF17 (MLRO) capability; exposure to control-environment reviews or remediation within a regulated lending environment.
