Overview

We are looking for someone with a passion for parks and wildlife to join our Board as a Trustee with responsibility for the conservation and improvement of the park area surrounding Brixton Windmill.

The Friends of Windmill Gardens (FOWG) was set up in 2003 to restore, preserve and enhance Brixton Windmill and Windmill Gardens. We are now a thriving community organisation supporting local residents, milling flour, educating schoolchildren and allowing visitors to experience the 200‑year‑old windmill. We are a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (1176991).

This is a new trustee role, which has been created to accelerate progress in making the site more welcoming, attractive and accessible to visitors. Active engagement, particularly with the local community around the windmill, is central to the vision, mission and purpose of the organisation.

As a Community Interest Organisation, we are keen that our Board reflects the local community and we particularly welcome applications from local candidates.

What are we looking for?

  • A passion for gardening, conservation and/or park/landscape management.
  • Experience in strategic planning or project management.
  • Strong communication and networking skills with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders, including volunteers, donors, and community members.

What will you be doing?

Brixton windmill is set within a park and has an active group of garden volunteers. We currently have an engaged, supportive Board and have just finalised our business plan for the next 3 years.

As a Trustee with responsibility for the conservation and improvement of the park area, you will work closely with the Board, Lambeth Council, other local parties and interest groups to oversee the development and implementation of park improvement strategies covering conversation, biodiversity and accessibility.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with experience of gardening, conservation and/or landscape management to gain knowledge and insight into how a charity is run. You'll be working with welcoming and engaged trustees and staff, and supporting an exciting, local community organisation. Check out our website to see our current programme of events and activities.
