IPPR is looking for an intern to work in its External Affairs team. The intern will work across all aspects of External Affairs work including proactive media relations, writing and editing for online and offline outputs, and assisting with events organisation.
Duties
- Assisting in a busy press office, drafting press releases, editing and drafting articles and blogs, answering journalists’ inquiries and ringing round/cold calling journalists.
- Drafting website copy, uploading website content, clearing and distributing press releases, maintaining database of journalists and logging and displaying media coverage.
- Editing and proofreading of reports and other publications, along with production tasks as appropriate.
- Assisting with event organising, running registration desks and taking photos and video at public events.
- General administrative assistance as required.
Skills and Experience
- Exceptional written communication skills, including the ability to write copy for a range of audiences and formats based on complex, technical content e.g. press releases, blogs, and website content.
- Ability to edit and proofread long- and short-form documents, liaise with authors and copyedit to house style.
- Meticulous attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
- Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills; the ability to deal with people at all levels, internally and externally, in a confident, assertive and professional manner.
- Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to organise and assist with events.
- Excellent IT skills (Microsoft Office and CMS skills essential; experience with social media and software such as Adobe Photoshop, InDesign or Elements highly desirable).
- Interest in UK public policy and politics and a commitment to IPPR’s values.
- An interest in working in an external affairs environment.
- Previous experience in an editing/publication role.
- Some experience of creating media (photos, video, audio) and publishing it in a variety of outputs.
The intern will be based in the IPPR office in London for a period of 6 months, starting June 2012. Working hours can be discussed at interview stage. Interviews will be held w/c 14 May 2012.
