We are excited to announce an exciting opportunity for a Research Software Engineer (RSE) as part of the research team of Imago, the Imagery Data Service. Imago is one of a set of new data services funded by ESRC’s Smart Data Research UK (SDR-UK) programme. The Imago data service is a collaborative effort led by the University of Liverpool, Newcastle University, and Harvard University, and aims to make satellite imagery more useful, useable and used across social research and policy.
Imago is developing data products in collaboration with data, distribution, and application partners that will unlock the potential of satellite imagery to solve some of the most urgent challenges facing the UK – especially where environmental vulnerability, urban development and housing, and health and wellbeing is concerned.
As a Research Software Engineer, you will play a key role in delivering Imago data products that advance social research using satellite imagery. You will be directly involved in the design, development, and deployment of data pipelines and workflows to support the creation of data products and the platform that makes them accessible to users. You will be responsible for managing codebases and for building and maintaining the computational infrastructure that underpins the Imago data service.
As a member of the Research Software Engineering (RSE) team, you will collaborate closely with an interdisciplinary team, including academics in social science, public health, and geographic data science from the University of Liverpool, Newcastle University, and Harvard University, as well as with partners in policy, government, and industry. Your contribution will be central to ensuring that the technical foundations of Imago are robust and open, and capable of supporting the delivery of the data service.
You will help build and maintain best practices in software development, reproducible research, and sustainable data infrastructure, supporting the effective use of satellite imagery in research and policy. This position is offered on a fixed term basis, expected to be until February 2029.
