In this theatre-based role, you will collaborate closely with a team of surgical specialists, including diploma holders and RCVS advanced practitioners in small animal surgery, alongside our experienced surgical referral nurses. Confidence in handling anaesthetics and working in a theatre environment is essential. Candidates who either hold or are keen to obtain a certificate in anaesthesia or surgery will find this role particularly rewarding. The hospital offers advanced surgical procedures such as TPLOs, fracture repair, thoracotomy, BOAS, and perineal hernia. While a solid understanding of these procedures is beneficial, support and further learning opportunities are readily available.

Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with specialist surgeons and RCVS advanced practitioners to ensure the smooth running of the referral service.
  • Plan caseloads and ensure the availability of appropriate equipment.
  • Provide effective pre, intra, and post-operative care for complex surgical patients.
  • Monitor anaesthetics and prepare patients for surgical procedures, ensuring multimodal analgesia.
  • Act as a scrub nurse when necessary, maintaining sterility and knowledge of veterinary instruments.
  • Communicate ongoing treatment plans to the inpatient team.
  • Conduct diagnostic imaging for advanced orthopaedic and soft tissue procedures, including CT scans.
  • Order specialist surgical consumable equipment.
  • Contribute to the external and internal referral process, liaising with referral clients and practices.
Experience:
  • RCVS Registered Veterinary Nurse.
  • Previous referral surgical experience is preferred but not essential.
  • Certification in Veterinary Surgical Nursing or Anaesthesia is advantageous.
  • Strong knowledge of veterinary surgical procedures, patient preparation, and general anaesthesia.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a high-pressure environment.
Hours: 40 hours per week, over 4 days, 08:00-18:30.Benefits:
