ROLE SUMMARY
The Head of Department, Teaching and Learning Excellence leads institution-wide work to improve learning and teaching, assessment, academic systems, faculty development, library and digital education practice across Higher Education (HE). The role supports the Dean (Higher Education) by designing and implementing practical frameworks, tools, and evidence systems that help BUV maintain strong academic standards and demonstrate readiness for accreditation and quality reviews. This is a cross-university role that works with all Schools and central academic units to ensure practices are consistent, scalable, and audit ready.

Reports to: Dean (Higher Education)
Works closely with:
- Heads of School / Discipline leads and Programme Leads
- Academic Quality, Academic Operations, Academic Services and Student Administration (ASSA)
- Library team
- Student Academic Support (SAS) team
- Learning technology / LMS support team (e.g., Canvas)
- Faculty and professional services leaders involved in academic delivery
Direct reports: Library and SAS Manager, Manager Online, and any assigned learning design support roles.
ROLE PURPOSE
The purpose of this role is to:
- Improve the quality and consistency of teaching, learning, and assessment across HE
- Build faculty capability through structured professional development
- Expand effective use of learning technologies and data to improve student learning
- Ensure evidence and documentation are organised, reliable, and ready for audits/accreditation
- Provide strong leadership for Library, Student Academic Support (SAS), and Learning Management System (LMS) services to improve student success and experience
SCOPE & COMPLEXITY
Leads concurrent higher education enhancement projects. Leads Library staff, SAS staff, LMS staff, and operational performance. Influences academic policy, learning design, assessment practice, and quality systems. Reduces institutional risk by improving consistency, documentation, and compliance. Requires strong collaboration and change leadership.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Learning, Teaching, and Assessment Enhancement
- Lead improvements in learning design and student-centred teaching practices across HE
- Strengthening assessment design so it is fair, valid, consistent, and aligned with learning outcomes and partner requirements
- Improve feedback quality and timeliness with closing the loop policies
- Support Schools with curriculum review, module updates, and programme modernization
- Promote inclusive teaching practices and employability-focused learning activities
Digital Education and Technology-Enhanced Learning
- Define and embed practical standards for blended, hybrid, and digital learning delivery
- Ensure Canvas and related academic systems are used consistently and effectively
- Promote good use of rubrics, gradebook setup, learning activities, and assessment tools
- Use learning analytics appropriately to improve engagement, retention, and outcomes
- Help Schools adopt scalable digital approaches that improve quality
Faculty Capability Development
- Build and deliver an HE-wide professional development framework
- Support Heads of School to embed consistent teaching, assessment, and moderation standards
- Coach and mentor staff leading curriculum, assessment, and quality improvement initiatives
- Develop practical toolkits that faculty can use
- Promote a culture of reflective teaching and continuous improvement
Library, Learning Resources, and Student Academic Support (SAS)
- Provide overall leadership for Library and SAS, including strategy, service standards, staffing, and performance management
- Lead SAS budgets, ensure value for money, and maintain clear reporting and governance
- Strengthen integration of Library and SAS with Schools so students can access support consistently and easily
- Lead the delivery of the 2026 Library improvement plan and increase adoption of Open Educational Resources (OER) where suitable
Higher Education Strategic Projects
- Lead or support HE strategic projects assigned by the Dean (Higher Education)
- Build clear project plans: outcomes, milestones, owners, risks, evidence, and reporting
- Ensure projects deliver practical improvements
- Provide regular progress reporting with evidence of impact
PERFORMANCE MEASURES
- HE-wide standards implemented for assessment design and moderation, with evidence of adoption
- Improved consistency in Canvas course build quality across Schools
- Annual faculty development plan delivered, with participation and measurable outcomes
- Library improvement plan delivered on time, with measurable service and student experience improvements
- HE Uplift strategic projects targets delivered on time
- Accreditation/quality review evidence systems are complete, organised, and reliable
POSITION SPECIFICATIONS
COMPETENCIES (knowledge, skills, and abilities)
Essential:
- Master’s degree (or equivalent professional standing)
- Strong experience in higher education learning and teaching enhancement, or curriculum leadership
- Demonstrated ability to improve assessment and moderation practices at scale
- Good knowledge of digital pedagogy and use of an LMS (e.g., Canvas)
- Experience building practical frameworks, templates, and evidence systems for review/audit
- Strong stakeholder management skills and ability to influence across Schools
- Experience leading academic services or student support functions
Desirable:
- Experience with international accreditation and quality frameworks
- Experience leading cross-institution change projects
- Experience in student success, learning support, academic skills, tutoring, or retention initiatives
- Experience modernising library/learning resource strategy
- Experience managing operational budgets and vendor contracts
