About the role

DMUsport Coaches will deliver expert tuition to the university’s student clubs and support the activity of the club, contributing to the delivery of the DMUsport player pathway. They will build working relationships with internal and external partners to benefit the club, student members and the university. The role requires 5.2 average hours per week during term time, including coaching, admin and competitions. Hours are typically Friday 17:30‑19:00 with fixture times subject to change – home fixtures 2 hours, away fixtures 4 hours, time to be confirmed based on opposition and facility availability.

Responsibilities

  • Provide expert tuition to the university’s student club.
  • Support and guide the club committee to improve participation numbers and foster growth and depth in competitive sport.
  • Deliver practical day‑to‑day coaching and devise and implement long‑ and short‑term development plans.
  • Attend all training sessions and fixtures/matches.
  • Analyse and report on the club’s performance.
  • Ensure health and safety policies and best practices are adhered to.
  • Promote student support services to members and engage in opportunities for CPD relating to student welfare.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with relevant colleagues, including DSU staff, sports clubs and staff responsible for university leisure facilities.
  • Promote sport at DMU to current and prospective students and the public.
  • Attend meetings and events as required, occasionally outside core hours.
  • Support other projects to meet departmental objectives.
  • Treat all DMU staff, students, contractors and visitors with dignity and respect.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Level 2 (or equivalent) qualified or working towards Level 2 (or equivalent) qualification, or relevant experience.
  • Experience of coaching relevant sport at an intermediate level.
  • Experience developing athletes and long‑term athlete development plans.
  • In‑depth understanding of coaching styles and practical delivery.
  • Understanding of Long‑Term Athlete Development and the structure of student sport, specifically in higher education.
  • Ability to manage people and programmes, ensuring delivery against objectives.
  • Ability to work independently on own initiative and as part of a team.
  • Ability to write reports or assessments and contribute to meetings as required.
  • Ability to work outside of normal core hours.
