Taskforce Overview
The new Violence and Intimidation Against Women and Girls (VIAWG) Taskforce will provide a nationally coordinated, traumaâinformed policing response that aligns with the Government's Safer Streets Mission and new VAWG strategy, the NPCC VAWG Framework, and the principles of Operation Soteria.
Safeguarding Team
The Safeguarding Team will provide a dedicated, specialist capability focused on protecting victimâsurvivors, strengthening safeguarding outcomes, and ensuring a consistent, traumaâinformed approach to violence and intimidation against women and girls across the rail network. Operating as a multiâdisciplinary team, they will work closely with internal partners, external agencies and victim support services to deliver strong safeguarding interventions, specialist support and improve the experience of victimâsurvivors.
Opportunity
We have an exciting opportunity for a Designing Out Crime Officer (DOCO) to join the VIAWG Taskforce. As a VIAWG DOCO with BTP, you will provide specialist designingâoutâcrime expertise to support our strategy to prevent Violence and Intimidation Against Women and Girls (VIAWG) across the rail network. You will play a key role within the VIAWG Taskforce Prevention & Protection Unit (VIAWG PPU), delivering environmental design interventions that make public transport spaces safer and more secure. This includes conducting Environmental Visual Audits (EVAs) and offering expert recommendations to reduce opportunities for VIAWGârelated offences, increase feelings of safety, and improve passenger confidence across the national railway network.
What You'll Be Doing
- Conduct Environmental Visual Audits (EVAs) across stations, platforms and wider rail environments to identify risks, improve safety, and reduce opportunities for VIAWGârelated crime.
- Provide specialist designingâoutâcrime advice to partners including Network Rail, TOCs and TfL, recommending practical environmental improvements such as enhanced lighting, sightlines, CCTV and signage.
- Work closely with planners, architects, engineers and project teams to embed VIAWG prevention principles into new designs, refurbishments and infrastructure projects.
- Prepare clear reports, maintain accurate audit records, and share expert insight, delivering briefings and promoting awareness of CPTED principles, VIAWG prevention strategies, equality, diversity and health & safety.
What You'll Bring To The Team
- A Level 5 Designing Out Crime qualification and strong experience in crime prevention, problemâsolving and partnership working.
- Excellent communication and influencing skills, able to negotiate confidently and build effective relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
- Strong analytical and reporting abilities, with the skills to interpret complex information, provide clear recommendations and manage your time effectively.
- A solid understanding of equality, diversity, health & safety and publicâsector responsibilities, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Desirable â Ability to interpret plans and drawings, knowledge of planning and communityâsafety legislation, awareness of railway practices, a driving licence and an understanding of the contact and complexities of VIAWG.
Additional Information
This is a role with a national remit and will therefore involve extensive travel and occasional nights away. The postholder will be required to pass the relevant British Transport Police Track Safety and First Aid qualification consistent with the role. The postholder will be required to complete Continued Professional Development (CPD) through the Crime Prevention Academy.
