What you need to know about the role
This role provides specialist Structural Engineering support across the British Steel business, contributing to and leading a range of work‑based, maintenance, investment (MM) and CAPEX projects. The jobholder will play a key role in ensuring that all structural engineering activities are delivered safely, efficiently and to a high technical standard. They will be responsible for upholding business requirements in the areas of safety, technical performance, quality, financial control, compliance and project delivery, ensuring all work aligns with company standards and expectations.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the delivery of end‑to‑end Structural Engineering support across British Steel, covering Major Maintenance, CAPEX and asset‑based refurbishment, replacement and compliance projects.
- Investigate plant‑related structural issues and provide safe, cost‑effective engineering solutions.
- Prepare or procure FEED studies, detailed designs, specifications, drawings and contract documents.
- Contribute to the design, specification, procurement, installation and commissioning of plant improvements and capital/MM/revenue projects.
- Produce or oversee detailed structural designs aligned with safety, technical, quality, budget and programme requirements.
- Support contractor selection, negotiation and performance management.
- Supervise contract staff and design teams, identifying training needs and providing mentoring, including Professional Institution support.
- Ensure full compliance with statutory, regulatory and asset‑related engineering requirements.
What we need to know about you
- Degree or HND in an engineering discipline, with achieved or active progress toward Professional Engineer status.
- Strong experience in Structural Engineering, supported by broader multi‑discipline awareness.
- Background in heavy industrial structural projects is desirable.
- Knowledge of building design, construction and services integration is advantageous.
- Proven experience designing in steel using current design codes, with awareness of Building Regulations and relevant industry standards.
- Understanding of CDM regulations, Health & Safety legislation and general construction compliance.
- Working knowledge of contracting processes and site‑based construction activities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with confidence engaging at all levels.
- Self‑motivated and capable of working independently and as part of a team; experience supervising staff or contractors is preferred.
