What you need to know about the role
We’re looking for experienced, reliable, practical and safety-minded heavy plant fitter and also a HGV fitter to carry out maintenance, inspection, diagnosis, and repair of heavy mobile plant, associated equipment and HGV's to ensure safe, reliable, and cost effective operation. The role involves working on a wide range of machinery including loading shovels, excavators, dump trucks, forklifts, telehandlers, and specialist equipment used in a demanding industrial environment. The HGV role involves working on Heavy Good Vehicles, trailers and specialist equipment including vacuum jetting tankers. Both roles have an expectation to work safely, maintain high standards of workmanship, and contribute to maximising equipment availability and workshop efficiency.
What you’ll be doing
- Maintenance and Repair of plant equipment
- Perform planned preventative maintenance (PPM), servicing, and repairs on heavy plant equipment.
- Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and basic electrical faults.
- Diagnose and repair faults involving engines, gearboxes, clutches, braking systems, suspension, steering, and electrical systems.
- Carry out breakdown repairs in workshops and on site in operational areas.
- Strip, inspect, and rebuild components including engines, transmissions, axles, pumps, cylinders, and undercarriage systems.
- Replace and repair pins, bushes, bearings, hoses, and structural components.
- Complete post repair testing and commissioning.
Inspection and Fault Diagnosis
- Undertake thorough inspections and identify defects.
- Use diagnostic equipment, technical manuals, and schematics to troubleshoot faults.
- Assess component condition and recommend repairs or replacement.
- Identify recurring issues and report concerns to supervisors.
What we need to know about you
- NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Plant Maintenance, Construction Equipment Maintenance, or Heavy Vehicle Maintenance.
- Proven experience maintaining and repairing heavy mobile plant.
- Strong understanding of diesel engines, hydraulics, transmissions, and braking systems.
- Ability to read technical drawings and service manuals.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Excellent fault finding and diagnostic ability.
- Strong hydraulic and mechanical knowledge.
- Good communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and under pressure.
- Computer literacy for job recording systems.
- High attention to detail.
- Practical, hands on approach.
Desirable:
- OEM training from manufacturers such as Caterpillar, CASE or Volvo Construction Equipment.
- FLT licence.
- IPAF and MEWP certification.
- Mobile plant operator competence.
