About this role: We are looking for a talented Junior Electrical Design Engineer to work on the detailed technical design of LV & MV systems in Solar PV plants and Energy Storage Systems (ESS) developed, constructed, and operated within the BSR group. As a Junior Electrical Engineer, you will support the Design & Engineering team in delivering LV & MV electrical designs for solar PV and battery energy storage projects. You will assist with technical design from concept through to construction, gaining hands-on experience under the mentorship of our Senior Electrical Engineer.
BSR group is an IET Enterprise Partner and provides additional support for a structured development programme leading to chartered engineer status for suitable candidates.
What we need from you:
- Contribute on the design of solar PV and BESS projects from conceptual configuration of plants and layouts to detailed SLD, wiring diagrams, calculations, and specs, including construction engineering support and final acceptance.
- Assist in developing single-line diagrams (SLDs), wiring diagrams, cable schedules, and equipment layouts.
- Help produce technical specifications and datasheets for LV/MV equipment (inverters, transformers, switchgear, UPS).
- Conduct basic load-flow and short-circuit calculations under guidance.
- Prepare and maintain design documentation in accordance with BS7671 (18th Edition), IET Code of Practice, and relevant BS/IEC standards.
- Support review of grid-connection compliance (P28, G59/G99) and earthing/grounding studies.
- Collect and compare equipment quotations; support the evaluation of inverter, BESS, transformer, LVSB, protection device offers etc.
- Coordinate with suppliers and technical advisors for technical documentation, installation drawings, and lead-times.
- Assist with site surveys and as-built documentation checks.
- Help investigate operational performance metrics (e.g., yield analysis, performance ratios).
- Participate in design reviews, identifying opportunities for optimisation and standardisation.
- Learn to use industry software tools (e.g., AutoCAD, PVSyst, Amtech/Cableizer) for cable sizing and protection studies.
What skills you will have:
- Essential: Up to 2 years’ experience (graduate or placement) in electrical design or engineering.
- Good understanding of electrical power systems, SCADA, and communications interfaces.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel for data analysis).
- UK driving licence.
- Desirable: Familiarity with solar PV system design principles or battery energy storage concepts.
- Exposure to P28, G59/G99, or similar grid-connection regulations.
- Basic experience with AutoCAD, PVSyst, Amtech, Cableizer, or comparable design tools.
- Membership (or working towards) a professional body (IET, IEEE, etc.).
Education: Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related STEM discipline, or equivalent professional experience and/or certifications. Membership of professional body looked upon favourably.
