We are seeking a highly motivated Software Developer to join the Centre for Cancer Genetic Epidemiology (CCGE), within the Department of Public Health and Primary Care at the University of Cambridge.

CCGE is a world-leading research centre focused on understanding cancer susceptibility and aetiology through the analysis of large-scale genomic, epidemiological and healthcare data.

Working with national and international collaborators, we develop innovative data-driven approaches to advance cancer prevention, early detection and risk-stratified healthcare.

This role offers the opportunity to develop software that supports cancer research and translates research findings into tools for clinical practice.

You will design, develop and maintain software across CCGE's research and clinical-translation portfolio, taking responsibility for defined components and projects.

Working closely with the Senior Software Developer and multidisciplinary and multi-institutional colleagues, you will contribute across the software development lifecycle, from requirements gathering and prototyping to testing, deployment and ongoing support.

Alongside software development, you will lead the scoping, coordination and delivery of technology and service-improvement projects across the Centre.

This will include engaging external suppliers, evaluating potential solutions and providing concise updates and recommendations to support decisions.

You will work autonomously within agreed priorities, using initiative to move projects forward.

Key responsibilities

  • Design, develop and maintain front-end web interfaces, back-end web servers and APIs.
  • Gather stakeholder requirements and investigate, prototype and evaluate solutions.
  • Maintain and deploy web applications, write tests and produce clear technical documentation.
  • Co-lead user support and contribute to quality and regulatory-compliance activities for relevant software products.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and contribute advice on software roadmaps and technical direction.
  • Coordinate technology and service-improvement projects, including work beyond software development.
  • Applications should have
  • A degree in an appropriate subject, or equivalent knowledge, skills and understanding gained through experience and professional qualifications.
  • Strong software engineering skills, including Python, Java Script/Type Script, web frameworks, databases, version control and automated testing.

You will have experience contributing across the software development lifecycle, working with existing codebases and producing clear documentation.

  • Strong organisational skills and a proactive approach, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Clear communication skills, the ability to build effective stakeholder relationships, and sound judgement about when to involve colleagues.

Experience of scientific or medical software, regulatory compliance, user-interface design, or coordinating projects with external suppliers would be advantageous.
