The Strategy and Impact Director plays a crucial role in providing strategic leadership by shaping and implementing the organisation's overall strategy and approach to impact. This includes establishing clear outcomes, ensuring robust monitoring and evaluation practices, and fostering a culture of continuous learning. Driving income growth through strategic fundraising efforts, developing strong relationships with donors, and creating partnerships that align with our charitable objectives. This position is essential for helping to reposition the organisation's charitable impact, ensuring that our efforts are focused, measurable, and well-resourced.

Duties and key responsibilities

  • Overall: To contribute to the overall strategic leadership of the British Safety Council by attending and supporting Board meetings (when required) as well as full participation in Executive meetings.
  • Impact Measurement & Reporting: Develop and maintain systems for continual learning and improvement of impact measures & reporting. Lead the review, development, implementation and continual refinement of BSC’s Purpose Roadmap ensuring it informs our MEAL Framework. Accountable for BSC’s annual Impact reports for the organisation and reporting requirements to donors. Prepare high-quality, data-driven reports and presentations for donors, highlighting programme successes, challenges, and impact stories. Ensure that all donor reporting requirements are met. Responsible for writing and submitting high-quality reports and maintaining a high standard of accountability and transparency. Ensure alignment between impact metrics and fundraising narratives. Work with new and existing members, customers and partners to co-design, implement and promote BSC’s charitable activities, across all appropriate sectors.
  • Policy: To lead on the British Safety Council’s formulation of ‘lines to take’ on all policy matters. To establish and maintain effective engagement and influence with the Government, opposition and other political parties, statutory bodies, trade associations and wider stakeholders, in order to commit to actions that will promote our vision for workplace health and safety and the wider strategic aims of the organisation in the UK and internationally. Lead on the development and delivery of our charitable strategy, repositioning the organisation both externally (together with the Marketing & Engagement Director) and internally (with the Head of HR). Develop and implement a diversified fundraising strategy focused on corporate donations both in the UK and internationally. Oversee donor income, contracts and agreements including reporting against income and outcomes. Take overall responsibility for the fundraising budget, both from a cost and income perspective. Identify, engage, and build strong relationships with existing and prospective donors, positioning BSC as the partner of choice for future funding. Lead prospecting, ensuring high-quality proposals and compliance with funder requirements. Act as the primary point of contact for donors, ensuring prompt responses to queries & concerns. Continually analyse programme risks, implementing mitigation measures.
  • Team Leadership & Collaboration: Manage a small team (initially just the Fundraising Manager) to support in the delivery of fundraising. Coordinate with the Communications team to integrate impact stories and data into marketing and communication materials and donor communication requirements across traditional and non-traditional core BSC sectors. Work closely with the Marketing and Engagement Director in relation to all aspects of brand development. Facilitate charitable knowledge sharing within BSC on ways of working with charitable partners, ensuring colleagues across the group understand and work within defined charitable guidelines, around delivery, reporting, and due diligence requirements and that BSC’s reputation for excellence in donor management is maintained.

Person Specification

  • Skills & Qualifications: Strategic, entrepreneurial, mission-driven, and results-oriented. A passionate leader who creates an environment where people are motivated to go the extra mile. Able to influence at all levels, including at board level. Exceptional written skills, with extensive experience in successfully writing proposals and donor reports, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and persuasively. Strong data analysis and impact measurement. Leadership experience managing teams and cross-functional projects. Excellent communication, negotiation, presentation and public speaking skills. Excellent organisational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple tasks. Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to build and maintain relationships with donors, partners, and colleagues. Ability to act with a sense of urgency for completing and following through on tasks as well as to resolve challenges in a timely manner. Ability to hold others accountable for delivery and follow through on commitments. Bachelor or Master’s degree in Non-profits Management, Business, Comms or related field.
  • Experience: 10+ years experienced in impact related work & corporate fundraising, within the non-profit sector. Proven success in fundraising and donor relationship management within the non-profit sector. Proven ability to design and execute advocacy campaigns (grassroots lobbying, media engagement, coalition-building). Extensive experience in report writing, developing impact measures and analysing data, along with powerful storytelling to showcase program impact and outcomes. Extensive experience at driving charitable strategy at board level. Strategic thinker with a passion for protecting lives of workers. Proficiency in using software and tools for data management, reporting, and communication. Cultural sensitivity and ability to work effectively in a diverse, multicultural environment. Experience of working directly for a Health, Safety or Wellbeing charity.
