Role Overview
We have an exciting opportunity for a Finance Assistant – Accounts Receivable and Banking to join our Finance team and play a key role in keeping our financial operations running smoothly. You will take ownership of a varied range of activities, including allocating cash receipts, completing bank reconciliations, processing manual invoices and credit notes, and resolving customer payment queries. You will also support credit control for Mates in Mind, British Safety Council’s sister charity, and help improve and automate our accounts receivable processes. This is a great opportunity for an organised, numerate and detail-focused individual who enjoys solving problems, collaborating across the business and finding smarter ways of working.
Key areas of work:
- Cash receipt and allocation: Post cash receipts, including BACS, cheques, payment gateway, credit card and direct debit payments, accurately and promptly. Match receipts against remittance information and notify the Credit Controller daily. Investigate and resolve unallocated, incorrect or complex payments by working with customers and internal stakeholders. Prepare and process customer refunds where required.
- Bank reconciliation, cash management and reporting: Complete weekly and month-end bank reconciliations for British Safety Council and Mates in Mind accounts. Investigate and resolve any reconciliation discrepancies promptly. Maintain the daily cash file to support effective financial oversight. Prepare monthly financial and cash flow reports and assist with aged-debtor reporting.
- Invoice and credit note processing: Process manual invoices and credit notes accurately and ensure they are sent to customers. Process and match credit card and direct debit payments daily. Respond to customer queries relating to invoices and payments. Support the correct processing of VAT exemptions and zero-rated VAT for international transactions.
- Credit control support and Mates in Mind collections: Manage the Mates in Mind credit control ledger and act as the main contact for overdue account management. Follow up on overdue balances and work with customers to resolve payment issues. Support the Credit Controller with British Safety Council collections, query resolution and reporting where capacity allows. Work with internal teams to ensure accurate and timely invoicing. Monitor and report on Mates in Mind aged-debtor balances.
- Systems and process improvement: Identify opportunities to improve and automate banking, cash management and accounts receivable processes. Support Certinia and Salesforce system improvements. Contribute to projects that improve financial workflows, accuracy and efficiency.
- Audit and compliance: Support the annual financial audit by preparing reconciliations, supporting documents and requested samples. Maintain accurate financial records and support internal controls. Help ensure compliance with relevant VAT reporting requirements.

Essential Qualifications, Skills and Attributes:
- Essential Skills & Qualifications: Good secondary level of education including Maths and English. Good verbal and written communication skills. Good numerical skills. Excellent telephone skills. Able to assimilate information quickly. A good understanding of Microsoft software applications. Good keyboard skills.
- Experience: Experience of working with financial data. Experience of handling a large volume of customer enquiries by phone and by email. Experience of working cross functionally within a team. Experience of working with financial software packages.
- Desirable: Further education or relevant finance qualifications. Experience using Certinia.
