Kingston Grammar School are seeking to appoint a talented, driven and passionate senior boys’ coach to join their successful rowing department at an exciting time in their school expansion. This role will be an integral part of the school’s ambition and determination not only to inspire, mentor and shape the next generation of rowers at the school but to re-establish KGS as one of the leading rowing schools in the UK.
Our new Director of Rowing, James Cracknell, is committed to building on the school’s success and reputation for developing and nurturing talent. Boys and girls who first stepped into a boat at KGS have gone on to become multiple World and Olympic Champions, World Champions at U19 and U23 level, winners at Henley Royal Regatta, the Boat Race and be awarded rowing scholarships at universities in the United States.
As the J16 Boys’ Lead Coach you will work closely with the Director of Rowing in setting strategic objectives and designing and implementing a high-performance training programme. This programme will be innovative, utilizing sports science to give the optimum physiological improvement alongside a strength and conditioning programme to maximise athletic ability. You will need to be able to communicate your technical vision on the water and create an environment in which the boys flourish, grow together and relish the chance to race for the school.
We are looking to appoint an experienced coach who has outstanding technical and physiological understanding, plus excellent communication, management, and crew building skills. The successful candidate will also be enthusiastic, approachable, confident, and believe in the school’s vision for rowing.
This role is offered on a full-time contract for an initial fixed term of one year. The hours will average 40 per week throughout the year and include extensive time during the school holidays for trips, camps, GB trials and regattas which can include weekend commitments. Successful candidates need to be able and willing to drive a minibus.
We offer a competitive salary dependent on experience plus generous benefits. KGS is a fully co-educational school, located in a prosperous and vibrant riverside town with good transport connections. KGS has its own boathouse at Thames Ditton on one of the best stretches of the Thames. In September the fleet of boats will be upgraded with six new shells. There are Concept 2 ergos, BikeErgs and RP3s at the boathouse which is located next to the school playing fields with a large weights room. Onsite at school, there is a gymnasium/sports hall, weights and ergometers and outside space to train.
Prior to interview, an online search will be conducted to identify any past or current incidents or issues that might affect your suitability to work with children and undertake this role. This is in line with guidance in Keeping Children Safe in Education. Please note this online search will be carried out only on publicly available information and be limited to issues relating to your suitability to work with children and/or in a school environment. Issues that arise will not automatically be a bar to your employment at this school.
Application Dates: From Tuesday 8th July 2025 to Wednesday 23rd July 2025.
