Senior Men’s lead coach – Putney Town Rowing Club
Putney Town Rowing Club is looking for a Senior Men’s Lead to lead the direction and delivery of the 2026/27 Senior Men’s rowing programme. This role focuses on developing competitive athletes, fostering a positive squad culture, and collaborating with the wider coaching team to achieve performance goals.
This is an opportunity to take ownership of a competitive senior programme at one of London’s established Tideway clubs, working with a motivated group of athletes and alongside PTRC’s wider coaching team. They are looking for someone who can build a strong, positive squad culture while developing athletes and crews capable of performing at major head races and regattas throughout the season.
About the Role
The Senior Men’s Lead Coach will take the lead on the direction and delivery of the Senior Men’s rowing programme, including:
- Developing and delivering a structured annual training and racing programme.
- Leading water sessions and providing clear technical coaching to athletes and crews.
- Planning crew development and making transparent, performance-based crew selection decisions.
- Setting clear expectations around training, attendance, availability and squad standards.
- Monitoring athlete development and providing regular, constructive feedback.
- Working with support coaches to ensure consistent delivery across sessions.
- Identifying appropriate racing opportunities and preparing crews effectively for competition.
- Building depth within the squad and creating pathways for developing athletes to progress.
- Working collaboratively with the Senior Women’s Lead Coach, Vice Captains and Captain on areas including training, racing, equipment and club operations.
- Supporting the effective and responsible use of the club’s fleet and coaching equipment.
- Contributing positively to the wider life and culture of PTRC.
Key Requirements
PTRC are interested in coaches who combine strong technical knowledge with the ability to motivate and develop athletes.
Ideally, you will have:
- Experience coaching competitive senior rowers
- Strong technical knowledge of rowing and an ability to communicate it effectively.
- The ability to plan and deliver a progressive training programme.
- A clear and fair approach to crew selection.
- Strong communication, organisation and leadership skills.
- The ability to create an inclusive, ambitious and accountable squad environment.
- A collaborative approach to working with other coaches and club volunteers.
- Appropriate British Rowing coaching qualifications, or equivalent experience.
- An understanding of Tideway rowing and racing would be advantageous.

The Programme
PTRC wants to continue developing a competitive Senior Men’s squad with a programme that combines performance, progression and retention.
The racing programme is expected to include key Tideway and national events, with opportunities determined by the ability and ambitions of the squad. The Lead Coach will have significant input into shaping the programme for the season.
The aim is to create an environment where athletes understand what is expected of them, receive high-quality coaching and have a clear pathway towards increasingly competitive racing.
Coaching Team
The Senior Men’s Lead Coach will work alongside the Senior Women’s Lead Coach and the wider PTRC coaching team. Each senior squad has its own Lead Coach, reflecting the different needs and programmes of the squads, while collaboration is expected where it benefits athletes and the club. The Lead Coach will report to the Club Captain and work closely with the relevant Vice Captain and squad representatives.
Support coaching is available within the club’s coaching budget, allowing the Lead Coach to build an effective coaching team around the programme.
Salary: Up to £25 p/h depending on qualification level
