Are you an experienced Nurse or Midwife looking for a new challenge? Do you have experience of leading and managing a team? At BPAS, we are looking for a Lead Nurse or Midwife to join our passionate teams in Milton Keynes and Northampton. You will provide abortion and sexual health information, pre‑treatment assessment and treatment to clients in a supportive manner. This role works 37.5 hours per week over Monday to Friday across the two units.

As the Lead Nurse or Midwife you will lead, manage and mentor a clinical team of nurses and midwives involved in the provision of the termination service. You will also deputise in the absence of the Treatment Unit Manager, ensuring the highest standards of care and safety for our clients.

About You

You will be a Registered Adult Nurse or Midwife (practising) who has experience of working within a clinical environment, where you have supervised or managed other clinical staff. You will have experience of working to guidelines, policies and procedures, and have experience of completing client documentation.

Main Duties of the Job

  • Deliver high standards of care in accordance with NMC Guidelines for Professional Practice and promote the safety and well‑being of clients at all times.
  • Assess the gestation of the pregnancy by ultrasound scanning, and ensure that the client is sure of her decision to request a termination and that the reason complies with the terms of the Abortion Act.
  • Carefully check for and implement any procedure indicated on Client Care Notes as appropriate – including administering medication for medical abortion procedures, cervical preparation and surgical treatment.
  • Assist in the orientation of new staff, including bank and agency staff, and provide an environment conducive to learning in which staff develop.
  • Complete Datix and ensure complaints or serious incidents are dealt with in a timely manner according to policy and procedure.
  • Complete clinical audits and act on the results, escalating them to the relevant person/team as necessary.
  • Assist the Unit Manager in setting budgets for the Unit and in ensuring that CQC standards are maintained.

Requirements

Experience

  • Leading and managing a clinical team
  • Completion of client documentation
  • Gynaecological nursing experience or relevant speciality (e.g. sexual health, contraception)
  • Assessment of Fraser‑Gillick competence
  • Experience of nurse admissions and discharges
  • Venepuncture

Qualifications

  • Registered Adult Nurse level 1 / Registered Midwife (practising)
  • Active NMC registration and valid PIN
  • Ultrasound scanning skills

Salary £45,584 – £51,479 per annum, depending on skills and experience.

Contract 12‑month fixed term covering maternity.

Working Pattern Monday, Tuesday, Friday – Northampton – 09:30 to 17:30; Wednesday & Thursday – Milton Keynes – 09:30 to 17:30.

Locations Milton Keynes will be your base unit with travel paid to the second unit as per the expenses policy.
