THE ROLE

The Sustainability Manager is responsible for leading delivery of sustainability performance for our buildings and places in line with British Lands 2030 Sustainability Strategy, and Net Zero Pathway, with this particular role focussed on our development projects. Communicating and supporting staff, external project teams and supply chain through the delivery of sustainability across our development portfolio.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Deliver corporate and project specific targets in line with 2030 Strategy and Sustainability Brief requirements and accreditation to ISO14001 Environmental Standard.
  • Deliver project specific sustainability targets across a large portfolio with direct day to day responsibility for over (20) projects (developments and Canada Water).
  • Achieve best in class sustainability ratings on all developments including BREEAM, Home Quality Mark, and WELL Standard.
  • Delivery of Net Zero Pathway – aligned with Scienced Based Targets, RICS WLC Guidance, NABERS, UKGBC and BBP commitments and responsible for providing robust verified data for offsetting strategy.
  • Work with Development Directors to lead design teams to ensure our developments are both embodied and operationally carbon efficient.
  • Oversee Placed Based Approach across our Developments – working with Social Impact Manager to integrate campus led initiatives into Local Charter plans focussed on connecting local stakeholders to opportunities, education, employment, supporting local businesses and wellbeing.
  • Responsible for leading Development Sustainability reporting and feed into the Annual Report and Sustainability Accounts.
  • Collate and prepare evidence to support our annual assurance process and external communications, ensuring that financial, carbon and other performance metrics claims can be backed up with robust and complete data.
  • Oversee submission of ESG benchmarks, such as GRESB and CDP by reviewing responses to relevant questions related to development projects.

Management and collaboration

  • Guide and support development teams through successful delivery of our Sustainability Brief and 2030 Strategy focussing on mitigating our environmental impacts related to energy, carbon, circular economy, materials, climate resilience, biodiversity, and water.
  • Engage and collaborate across business departments including Property Management Team at early stages of developments to ensure successful delivery of Design for Management and Soft Landings/Aftercare processes.
  • Leasing and Marketing to ensure positive communication of sustainability across our developments.
  • For each development project, collaborate with the development team to recruit appropriate sustainability consultants, advising on scope of work and briefing successful consultant on our 2030 Strategy and ambition for the sustainability Brief.

Corporate and Industry Leadership

  • Review government, local policy, industry guidance and commitments and where appropriate integrate into BL’s documentation.
  • Represent BL in industry working groups specialising in embodied and operational carbon and integration of low carbon building materials, and Modern Slavery matters.
  • Support planning team in review and feedback on industry, Government and Policy consultations and surveys.

Training

  • Deliver training and carry out engagement with designers, consultants and contractors to ensure understanding of our sustainability strategy and Sustainability Brief.

Key Competencies

  • Leads and influences large teams to achieve outcomes for complex projects and successfully builds relationships across internal and external teams.
  • Accountable and responsible for complex design and procurement issues working against fast moving project deadlines.
  • Demonstrates and communicates the value of sustainability objectives in conventional cost and value terms.
  • Good communication skills to articulate sustainability to a wide variety of stakeholders with varied understanding to ensure our business case and value is clearly presented e.g. Marketing brochures etc.
  • Good organisation skills to manage multiple projects and varied teams at once.

ABOUT YOU

  • Demonstrated experience in the sustainability in the property and construction industry.
  • Experience of ISO14001 Standard accreditation.
  • Experience of building certification schemes such as BREEAM, WELL, Home Quality Mark.
  • Good knowledge of the Design for Performance NABERS UK process.
  • Good knowledge of construction carbon reporting, SBTIs, RICS and whole life carbon assessments.
  • Experience in completing submissions to ESG benchmarks, such as CDP, DJSI and GRESB.
  • Knowledge of the planning system such as London Plan and GLA requirements, and UK Building Regulations.
  • Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams with the ability to quantify the impact of decisions from a cost and value perspective.
  • Strong professional network and networking skills.
