East Brighton Golf Club is seeking an experienced and motivated Head Greenkeeper to lead the continued development and presentation of our golf course and greenkeeping team. Over the past three years, the club has delivered a significant and positive programme of course improvements, including major bunker renovation works, with the latest phase now entering an important grow-in and refinement stage ahead of the playing season.
The Head Greenkeeper will be responsible for driving the quality, consistency and conditioning of all playing surfaces, ensuring that the full benefit of the Club’s recent investment is realised and sustained across the course. This is an excellent opportunity for a technically strong, collaborative leader to take ownership of a well-established downland course and play a key role in its continued progression.
Key Responsibilities- Lead, manage and develop the greenkeeping team through a supportive, coaching-led approach, setting clear expectations and guiding best practice across all areas of course maintenance.
- Ensure consistent standards and methods of work are applied across the course, embedding agreed practices to deliver uniform presentation and performance.
- Plan and deliver effective daily, weekly and seasonal maintenance programmes that balance quality, sustainability and available resources.
- Drive the continuous improvement of playing surfaces, maximising the benefit of recent investment and pushing standards forward where appropriate.
- Manage machinery, materials and budgets responsibly and efficiently.
- Ensure full compliance with Health & Safety, environmental and best-practice standards.
- Communicate clearly and constructively with management and members regarding course condition, priorities and longer-term plans.
- Take a key leadership role in the next phases of bunker renovation and refinement, working with the General Manager, contractors and the course architect.
We are seeking a collaborative, forwards-thinking leader who combines strong technical knowledge with the ability to coach and develop others. The successful candidate will be comfortable working as part of a wider club leadership team and will value clear communication, shared standards and consistency of practice. They will lead by example, support their team in understanding why practices are applied, and take pride in building long-term quality through both people and process.
Essential Requirements- Proven experience ideally as a Course Manager, Head Greenkeeper or Deputy.
- Recognised qualification in sport turf management (e.g. NVQ Level 3 or equivalent).
- Strong leadership, organisational and communication skills.
- Sound understanding of modern turf management and sustainable practices.
- PA1/PA2/PA6 licences.
- Experience leading teams through periods of change or development.
- Knowledge of irrigation systems, drainage principles and machinery maintenance.
- Experience contributing to course improvement or renovation programmes.
- A competitive salary, dependent on your experience.
- A supportive working environment with clear direction and realistic expectations.
- The chance to play a key leadership role in the next phase of our course developments.
- BIGGA membership and continued professional development encouraged.
- Benefits you would expect, including parking, discounted food, golf & full uniform.
