The Management Accountant will play a key role in a growing multi-site retail business by producing accurate, timely and meaningful management accounts, while providing clear insight into site and business performance. The role is responsible for preparing and reviewing monthly profit and loss accounts, maintaining strong balance sheet control, and ensuring financial information is reliable, well understood and useful to the wider business.
This is a hands-on role suited to someone who can work confidently with the detail, while also stepping back to understand what the numbers mean operationally. A key part of the role is to proactively work with operational teams, site managers, regional managers and central support departments to review performance, challenge results, identify opportunities for improvement, and support practical action that improves profitability, cost control and business understanding.
- Prepare accurate and timely monthly management accounts, ensuring profit and loss information is complete, reliable and clearly presented.
- Review site-level P&Ls in detail, identifying variances, trends, risks and opportunities, and providing clear commentary to support decision-making.
- Maintain strong balance sheet control through regular reconciliations, review of supporting documentation, and timely investigation of issues.
- Work proactively with operational teams, site managers and regional managers to review financial performance, explain results, challenge assumptions and support improvement actions.
- Build strong relationships with operational teams so that finance is seen as a helpful, visible and proactive business partner rather than a reporting-only function.
- Translate financial information into practical insight for non-finance colleagues, helping operational teams understand their numbers and the impact of their decisions.
- Identify areas of underperformance, cost leakage, margin pressure or process weakness, and work with the relevant teams to agree and follow through on corrective actions.
- Support the FP&A Manager and wider finance team with monthly reporting packs, variance analysis, forecasting, budgeting and business performance reviews.
- Work alongside operational and project teams on new site integrations, acquisitions, refurbishments and other business projects, ensuring costs are tracked, reviewed and challenged appropriately.
- Provide project accounting support where required, including budget tracking, cost review, performance monitoring and post-implementation analysis.
- Ensure robust financial controls are applied across management accounts, balance sheet reconciliations and reporting processes.
- Review existing processes and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, consistency and usefulness of reporting.
- Support the development of better reporting and analysis that gives operational teams quicker, clearer and more relevant information.
- Assist with audit preparation, year-end processes, statutory reporting requirements and other compliance activities where required.
- Provide practical support to the wider finance team, including helping to resolve issues, improve processes and maintain momentum during busy reporting periods.
- Undertake ad hoc analysis, reporting and project work as required by the Financial Controller, Finance Director or wider senior leadership team.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Qualified, part-qualified, or qualified by experience, with strong technical accounting knowledge and a clear understanding of management accounts and balance sheet control.
- Experience working in a fast-paced, growing business, ideally within retail, multi-site, hospitality, leisure or another high-volume environment.
- Strong understanding of monthly reporting, profit and loss analysis, balance sheet reconciliations, accruals, prepayments, journals and financial controls.
- Commercial awareness and the ability to understand how operational activity affects financial performance.
- Confident working with operational teams and non-finance colleagues, with the ability to explain financial matters clearly and practically.
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interrogate data, identify issues, spot trends and turn findings into useful recommendations.
- Comfortable working hands-on with detail while also understanding the wider business impact.
- Strong Excel skills and experience using financial systems; Sage experience would be beneficial.
- Experience of improving processes, strengthening controls or developing reporting would be advantageous.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to build strong relationships across finance, operations and senior management.
- Ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines and remain calm and solutions-focused in a changing environment.
- Experience supporting projects, acquisitions, new site openings or operational improvement initiatives would be beneficial.
