Job Title: Financial Controller

Purpose of the Role

The Financial Controller will play a key role in a larger retail business going through rapid growth and change. The role is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and control of financial reporting, while also supporting the development of stronger processes, systems, and ways of working across the finance function. This is a hands‑on role suited to someone who is comfortable operating at both a detailed transactional level and a senior management level, with the ability to challenge, improve, and implement change in a practical and positive way.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of the accuracy and completeness of the monthly management accounts, ensuring financial information is produced in a timely, reliable, and meaningful way.
  • Lead and strengthen balance sheet controls, reconciliations, review processes, and supporting documentation across the finance function.
  • Ensure robust financial controls are in place across all areas of finance, identifying risks, gaps, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Support the Finance Director with statutory reporting, audit preparation, year‑end processes, and compliance requirements.
  • Work closely with finance managers and operational teams to improve the quality, accuracy, and usefulness of financial reporting.
  • Provide practical support and guidance to the finance team, stepping in where required to resolve issues, unblock problems, and maintain momentum.
  • Review existing processes and implement improvements that support a growing, multi‑site retail business.
  • Drive change within the finance function, helping the team adapt to new systems, better controls, improved reporting, and more efficient ways of working.
  • Support acquisitions, new site integrations, and business growth projects by ensuring financial processes and controls are established quickly and effectively.
  • Develop reporting, controls, and processes that provide better visibility of performance, risk, cash, margins, costs, and operational issues.
  • Build strong working relationships with operational leaders, site teams, and central support departments to ensure finance is seen as a proactive and helpful business partner.
  • Lead, coach, and develop members of the finance team, encouraging accountability, attention to detail, continuous improvement, and a positive approach to change.
  • Challenge existing ways of working constructively and ensure improvements are embedded rather than simply identified.
  • Undertake ad hoc projects, analysis, and problem‑solving activities as required by the Finance Director and wider senior leadership team.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Qualified accountant, or qualified by experience, with strong technical accounting knowledge and a clear understanding of financial controls.
  • Experience working in a fast‑paced, growing business, ideally within retail, multi‑site, hospitality, leisure, or another high‑volume environment.
  • Strong understanding of monthly reporting, balance sheet management, reconciliations, audit requirements, and financial governance.
  • Comfortable working hands‑on with the detail while also being able to step back and understand the wider business impact.
  • Experience of improving processes, implementing change, and strengthening controls within a finance team.
  • Strong Excel and financial systems skills, with the ability to interrogate data, identify issues, and present information clearly.
  • Commercial awareness and the ability to understand how operational decisions affect financial performance.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain finance matters clearly to both finance and non‑finance colleagues.
  • Experience of managing, supporting, or developing finance team members would be beneficial.
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage competing priorities, and remain calm and solutions‑focused in a changing environment.

Behaviours and Personal Attributes

  • Hands‑on and willing to get involved at all levels when required.
  • Flexible and adaptable, with a positive approach to a business that is growing and changing quickly.
  • Enjoys implementing change and can bring people on the journey in a practical, supportive, and confident way.
  • Proactive, solutions‑driven, and comfortable challenging the status quo.
  • Highly organised, logical, and methodical, with strong attention to detail.
  • Commercially minded, inquisitive, and keen to understand the wider business rather than working in isolation.
  • Confident communicator who can build strong relationships across finance, operations, and senior management.
  • Resilient and persistent, with the ability to follow through and ensure improvements are delivered.
  • Approachable team player with a strong work ethic and a willingness to support others.
  • Maintains a professional approach while contributing positively to team culture.

Other Duties

In addition to the above, the post holder will be required to undertake any other reasonable duties within their capabilities as requested by the Finance Director or the Company. The Company reserves the right to vary or amend the duties and responsibilities of the role in line with the needs of the business.
