British Engines is a leading engineering group with a long heritage in the North East of England since 1922.

Employing approximately 1,200 people, our eight businesses design, manufacture, assemble, test and service leading products and components for a wide range of industries including the renewables, digital, defence, power, nuclear, aerospace, robotics, oil and gas, chemical, marine, construction and agriculture sectors.

We’re looking for a Compliance Manager to strengthen how governance, risk and compliance are embedded across British Engines.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, this role is central to ensuring the Group operates in line with all applicable laws, regulations and internal policies, while supporting the safe and responsible delivery of our strategic objectives.

You’ll take ownership of developing and embedding a clear, practical and engaging compliance framework across a global, multi-functional organisation. This isn’t just about setting policies — it’s about helping colleagues understand what’s required, why it matters, and how to apply it in their day-to-day roles.

What you'll be doing

• Develop and maintain the Group compliance framework, ensuring alignment with all applicable laws, regulations and internal policies
• Monitor regulatory developments and assess their impact on Group policies and practices
• Coordinate the development, review and governance of Group policies and delegated authorities, including drafting and updating policies in line with new legislation
• Manage and maintain the Group Risk Register, ensuring risks are clearly identified, controlled and mitigated
• Provide clear, structured reporting and assurance to the Executive Team and Board
• Promote a strong culture of integrity and ethical conduct, including oversight of whistleblowing arrangements
• Lead GDPR compliance across the Group, including data protection practices, risk assessments and data subject rights
• Act as a key point of contact for data privacy matters, supporting the business with practical guidance
• Work with internal and external stakeholders including auditors, advisors and regulators as required
• Partner with policy owners, subject matter experts and Learning & Development to design and deliver compliance training and awareness programmes
• Engage with stakeholders across the business to ensure policies and processes are understood, accessible and effective
• Leverage technology to streamline compliance processes, improve reporting and support more efficient ways of working
• Drive continuous improvement in governance processes and compliance awareness across the Group
• Support the Company Secretary with Group administration, including managing the process of Board appointments and coordinating induction and ongoing training for Board members

Who we're looking for

We’re looking for an experienced compliance or governance professional who can combine technical expertise with the ability to engage, influence and build trust across all levels of the organisation.

You’ll bring strong experience working in a corporate compliance, risk or governance role, alongside a solid understanding of GDPR and data protection requirements, including practical exposure to DPIAs, LIAs and policy development.

You’ll be confident using technology to improve processes and ways of working, with a proactive mindset focused on efficiency, continuous improvement and a willingness to challenge existing approaches where needed. Strong organisational skills are key, as you’ll be managing multiple priorities and delivering high-quality outputs in a structured and timely way.

With excellent communication and interpersonal skills, you’ll be comfortable working with a wide range of stakeholders, including senior management and Board members. You’ll be able to explain complex requirements clearly, provide practical guidance, and challenge constructively where needed

You’ll bring a high level of attention to detail, a strong ethical mindset and a clear sense of responsibility. You may have already undertaken some legal or corporate governance training and be keen to put your knowledge into practice, or be motivated to work towards a recognised qualification.

Success in this role will be reflected in the development of a clear, effective and well-embedded compliance framework, increased engagement and understanding across the business, and strong assurance to leadership that governance and regulatory requirements are being met.

This position will be on a full time, permanent basis. The hours of work are 35 per week, Monday to Friday, including an early finish on a Friday.
