We are looking for 2 paid interns to join our Events Team on a fixed‑term contract, and support in the delivery of our Annual Meeting, an exciting 4‑day event taking place in Birmingham! The BES Annual Meeting is Europe’s largest and most influential annual event dedicated to ecology, bringing together more than 1,500 ecologists from around the world. The 2026 BES Annual Meeting will take place in Birmingham 14‑17 December, with a limited online programme delivered alongside the in‑person event.

The Events Interns will support the delivery of the Annual Meeting as an integral part of the Events Team. You will get the chance to develop your skills in a wide range of areas and gain hands‑on experience in event management. This is an unrivalled opportunity for individuals wanting to gain experience in event management. If you are interested in developing your skills to work within the events industry, you know the importance of good customer service, and have a very strong eye for detail, this is for you.

Responsibilities

  • Administer event bookings, confirmation letters, certificates of attendance & receipts through the CRM database
  • Administer the Events Team’s shared inbox and respond to delegate queries
  • Create pre‑conference information for delegates
  • Arrange order and delivery of conference materials
  • Assist with collecting information for the online conference agenda
  • Take ownership of a particular element of the Annual Meeting
  • Assist in the set up and development of the online conference platform
  • Provide onsite and online delegate support
  • Support online sessions run through the online conference platform
  • Record and maintain important event data like registrations, invoice payments and ordering of materials
  • Create and update webpages for each event, including copy and images

Applicants must have the right to live and work in the UK. Successful applicants will need to provide evidence that they have the right to live and work in the UK. The BES is unable to provide visa sponsorship and unable to hire anyone living outside the UK.

Benefits

  • 4‑day week: The BES offer a voluntary, opt‑in 4‑day working week model for all full time staff. Staff who opt‑in may work 32 hours over 4 or 4.5 days at no loss of salary.
  • Leave: Employees receive 25 days annual leave, increasing by 1 each year to a maximum of 30 days, plus additional leave between Christmas and New Years.
  • Sick Leave: The BES also offers a generous paid sick leave policy.
  • Pension: The BES contributes the equivalent of 8% of your annual salary into a sustainable pension fund. You are welcome to top this up with your salary at your own discretion.
  • Well‑being: The Society runs an annual well‑being programme, including social trips, lunches, creative courses and sustainable gifts.
  • Hybrid Working: BES staff are based at least 10 days a month at our office near Old Street in London. We endeavour to make our new custom‑designed office a relaxed environment, with a casual dress‑code, free coffee, fresh fruit, pastries and toast, and regular social activities. The office adjoins a beautiful canal where you can watch the local wildlife. We have dedicated break‑out working spaces and a dedicated private well‑being room.
