Role Purpose

To support teachers, learners, and school partners in delivering high-quality British Council programmes at PSU. The Teaching Assistant ensures smooth classroom operations, reinforces safeguarding and child protection standards, and acts as a point of contact for parents and school staff. The role also supports customer-facing functions by passing on queries, answering common concerns using approved FAQs, and ensuring feedback is relayed to the School Customer Management (SCM) representative. In doing so, Teaching Assistants help to keep all parties informed, strengthen parent confidence, and support the British Council’s reputation for quality and care.

Main Accountabilities:

  • Classroom & Learning Support
    • Assist teachers with lesson preparation, classroom organisation, and resource management.
    • Supervise students during lessons, breaks, and transitions to ensure safety and behaviour standards.
    • Provide one-to-one or small-group support to learners, including those with additional needs.
    • Encourage participation, model positive behaviour, and support English use in class.
  • Customer-facing Contact (in coordination with SCM)
    • Act as an approachable point of contact for parents and school staff during school hours.
    • Answer routine questions or concerns using the approved FAQ and guidance materials.
    • Refer all non-routine, sensitive, or unresolved issues to the SCM representative.
    • Support the customer feedback process by ensuring queries and concerns are logged, shared with the right people, and followed up on until closure.
    • Work with SCM staff to help “close the loop” by relaying outcomes back to parents, teachers, and school management.
  • School Relationship Support
    • Help maintain constructive day-to-day communication with school management and homeroom teachers in Thai.
    • Provide interpretation/translation support during parent-teacher meetings and school events.
    • Ensure academic updates, schedule changes, and notices are passed on accurately and promptly, following agreed communication channels.
  • Operational & Administrative Support
    • Manage registers, attendance records, and incident logs.
    • Support enrichment and remedial programmes, reading initiatives, and student events.
    • Assist with parent events, open days, and school promotions.
    • Provide admin support to on-site British Council staff (printing, distributing resources, preparing classrooms).
  • Key Safeguarding Responsibilities
    • Promote a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
    • Be vigilant to signs of safeguarding or wellbeing concerns.
    • Report any concerns promptly to the National Safeguarding Manager or Safeguarding Focal Point.
    • Maintain confidentiality and handle safeguarding information responsibly.
    • Follow all safeguarding policies and procedures.
    • Follow the Safeguarding Code of Conduct.
    • Understand and uphold the British Council’s commitment to preventing Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Harassment (SEAH) in the workplace.
    • Be aware of professional boundaries and respectful conduct with colleagues and students.
    • Report any concerns or allegations relating to SEAH promptly to the People Function representative.
  • Key EDI Responsibilities

About You (essential requirements for the role):

  • A positive approach to working with children and the ability to motivate, inspire and build rapport; excellent team-working ability, organisational skills and ability to manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to work flexibly; IT skills (e.g. use of Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in Thai and English.
  • Ability to build trust and rapport across cultural contexts.
  • Problem-solving and flexibility in fast-moving school environments.
  • Fluent Thai (oral and written).
  • Functional English (oral and written) for effective communication with teachers and British Council staff.
  • Willingness to travel between PSU sites as required.
  • Post holder may occasionally be required to work during evenings and weekends due to parents’ evenings and school events.
  • During school breaks (e.g. March – May) the post holder may be required to work at a nearby British Council teaching centre.
  • Six months of experience of working with children.
  • Undergraduate university degree or equivalent.

Desirable

  • Early Years qualification.
  • Special Education Needs (SEN).
