The British Council has two teaching centres in Bangkok, Thailand. The main centre in Siam Square is the largest, with around 2,000 students per term. It is the main hub of operations and has several senior managers, over 20 instructors, and teams for marketing, customer services, and facilities support. The second centre in Pinklao is smaller, with around 500 students, up to eight instructors, and one or two managers. Both centres work closely together, allowing knowledge sharing and professional development opportunities. They have a strong reputation for high-quality teaching and are among the leading English language providers in Thailand.

In addition to courses at these centres, the British Council also runs large and well-known partner school contracts, where instructors are based in mainstream schools. The academic year in Thailand runs from May to April. Young learners attend two 21-week semesters, while adults study in continuous courses. Intensive summer courses are offered in March and April around the Songkran (Thai New Year) period. Partner schools follow a similar calendar, with some differences based on their needs. Partner school operations run Monday to Friday, with weekends usually on Saturday and Sunday for full-time staff. Teaching mainly takes place during school hours, but staff may also support after-school programmes and must attend parent-teacher events held twice a year. Programmes are regularly updated to meet the changing needs of Thailand's economy and learners.

The British Council is committed to teaching excellence and provides regular professional development, including INSETTs, mentoring, line management support, and possible funding for qualifications such as TYLEC and Trinity DipTESOL (funding is discretionary). Instructors are expected to stay up to date with ELT developments, take part in and deliver INSETT sessions, carry out reading and research, and complete all administrative tasks on time, including maintaining student records, marking, report writing, assessment administration, and attending staff meetings.

The purpose of this role is to promote and ensure the delivery of high-quality English language teaching and effective learning experiences for all students. It also supports the broader objectives of the British Council by contributing to its mission of fostering cultural relations and mutual understanding between the UK and other countries.

The British Council is seeking a passionate and dedicated Hourly Paid Instructor of English to deliver high-quality, engaging lessons tailored to diverse learner needs. The role involves planning and teaching English classes, monitoring student progress, providing feedback, and fostering learner independence. Instructors will also contribute to course development, complete administrative tasks, and participate in professional development. The position supports marketing efforts, ensures excellent customer service, and upholds British Council standards in safeguarding, equality, and compliance. Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor's Degree
• Recognised Certificate in EFL, i.e. CELTA or Trinity Certificate TESOL
• 2 years full-time post Certificate (i.e. CELTA or Trinity Certificate TESOL) experience gained from teaching a variety of age groups and levels, i.e. young learners and adults (we will, however, consider strong applications from candidates who do not meet the two years post-cert requirement): Note that a minimum of 1200+ hours of experience should have been gained from teaching two or more of the following age groups:

• Young learners aged 4 to 7
• Young learners aged 8 to 12
• Young learners aged 13 to 17
• Adults aged 17 +

• DELTA or DipTESOL
• Relevant Master's Degree, or PGCE
• Young learner ELT qualification (e.g. CELTYL, TYLEC)
• Very Young Learner ELT qualification (e.g. NILE Teaching English is Pre-Primary Education)
• SEN qualification
• Working in a mainstream school in Thailand, teaching centre in Thailand, or similar context
• Working with large monolingual groups
• Working with SEN learners

Salary and Benefits

Other Information

• Tentative Start date: May 2026 (depending upon hiring process)
• Contract type: Fixed Term (FTC)
• Contract duration: 12 months (renewable upon mutual agreement and business requirement)
• Location: Bangkok, Thailand
• Language Requirement: High proficiency in English, i.e. full mastery of English across all 4 skills equivalent to user (CEFR C2) IELTS Band 8/9 in each of 4 sections of the academic module.
• Domestic/International Travel: The post may require the employee to travel to places of business outside of teaching centres and partner schools in Bangkok. The British Council will provide support in these instances.
• Weekend Working: The post requires working on Saturdays and Sundays from 8:00 am.
• Termly Commitment: The post requires hourly-paid instructors to commit to delivering a full semester.
• Working Hours: For staff based at partner schools or universities, working hours will tend to follow institutional timetables (with classes in Thailand usually being scheduled between 7:30 am and 3:30 pm, Monday to Friday), but there may also be a requirement to carry out after-school work, for example when supporting or delivering an extracurricular offer. Working hours in teaching centres range between 8:00 am-9:45 pm, seven days a week.
• Proof of Identity requirements/right to work in country: Candidates are expected to have researched whether they have the right to live and work in the country in which the role is based. Given that our offices have different legal status depending on the work we do in those countries, we recommend that you contact HR in country for additional information on the likelihood of securing a visa. Only at its discretion will the British Council provide support so please check first whether visa support is offered.
