Overview

The Royal Army Medical Service uses a huge range of medications and medical devices. As a Pharmacist Officer, you have the medical knowledge to advise senior commanders on the use and management of medications. You can give guidance on distributing medical supplies and pharmaceutical care in the Joint Hospital Group Units. You can also advise GPs in primary care and provide pharmaceutical support to overseas bases. During conflict or other operations, you deploy with a Multi-Role Medical Regiment (MMR) where you provide dispensing and ward-based clinical service. You are taught basic military, survival and weapon-handling skills, which prepares you for Army life. On completion you are awarded a commission into the Army Medical Service.

Responsibilities

  • Be our resident expert on medications.
  • Give advice at senior levels and ensure medical teams provide the best healthcare to troops.
  • Advise on the use and management of medications, distribution of medical suppliers, and pharmaceutical care in Joint Hospital Group Units.
  • Provide dispensing and ward-based clinical services during deployments with the MMR.
  • Support GPs in primary care and provide pharmaceutical support to overseas bases.

Qualifications

  • Accredited degree in pharmacy (MPharm, BPharm, BSc) and a registered member of the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).

Salary and Benefits

  • The minimum amount you will earn during training: £34,676
  • Pay after completing basic trade training: £41,456
  • Age requirement: From 17 years 9 months to 36 years 11 months
  • Student bursary (up to £51,000): Open to candidates who graduate with an Army-endorsed pharmacy degree and join the Royal Army Medical Services as a Pharmacist for at least 4 years (paid in annual installments of £5,000 during final three years of university, plus a lump sum of £36,000 on successful completion of Officer training; may also include a lump sum of £5,000 during one year of professional development)
  • Minimum salary of £39,671 during certain stages
  • Deployment roles combine community and hospital pharmacy elements
  • Open to candidates who will graduate with an Army endorsed pharmacy degree and intend to join RAMS as Pharmacist for at least 4 years
