For an active, capable Army we need every soldier and officer to be fit and well. That means protecting our troops' health and wellbeing, wherever they are in the world. As an Environmental Health Practitioner, you advise commanders on environmental health, occupational hygiene, preventing disease and environmental protection. You will assess locations and risks on reconnaissance missions before deployments. The Royal Army Medical Service (RAMS) provides medical support to operations, exercises and expeditions worldwide, maintaining the health of servicemen and women.
Responsibilities
- Advise military commanders on water and food safety, environmental health, and occupational hygiene.
- Help prevent disease outbreaks and provide guidance on safe environments for troops.
- Advise frontline troops on the safest places to build military bases and camps.
- Conduct reconnaissance to assess locations and risks before deployment.
Qualifications and Training
- Fully recognised civilian BSc in Environmental Health.
- GCSE requirements: 5x GCSEs at grade C/4 or above (including English Language, Mathematics, and Science); or 4x GCSEs at grade C/4 or above (including English Language, Mathematics, and Double Science or two individual Sciences; Geography can count as a Science). Plus 104 UCAS points.
- Alternative qualifications accepted as GCSE equivalents: Key Skills Level 2, Functional Skills Level 2, and Adult Literacy/Numeracy certificates.
- Complete specialist Army Environmental Health Practitioner Insight Event.
- Begin practical training at the Defence School of Healthcare Education while undertaking a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Health from Leeds Beckett University.
- You will gain qualifications in occupational health and pest control over three years, including NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and a BPCA Certificate in Pest Control.
Progression and Training Details
You will start practical training with RAMS and pursue the BSc (Hons) Environmental Health degree concurrently. Training and degree progression occur over three years, leading to professional qualifications in occupational health and pest control.
Pay and Benefits
- During training: £26,334 (minimum amount you’ll earn)
- After completing basic trade training: £42,546
- Starting salary: £25,200 a year from the start of your training, increasing with progression
- Age range: From 17 years 9 months to 35 years 6 months
