The Parkes Institute for the Study of Jewish/non-Jewish Relations within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Southampton is a community of scholars, archivists, librarians, and students from different disciplines. The institute is named after the Reverend Dr James Parkes, who campaigned, as early as the 1920s, against the rise of racist nationalism in Europe. One of the key aspects of the Parkes Institute's activities is to continue, through research, education and public engagement, the fight against antisemitism and all forms of racism.
The Parkes Institute and the History department are launching an MA Holocaust History in October 2023 and are seeking to recruit a lecturer in Modern European Jewish history. We regard c. 1750 as the start of Modern History. While the position is open to any specialist of continental Jewish European history, preference may be given to candidates working on the history and culture of Jews in Central Europe, broadly understood.
The new lecturer will be asked to contribute to the teaching of Parkes and History modules at UG and PGT level, according to needs. These may include:
- The History BA core modules (Y1 and Y2)
- Option modules such as Who is Anne Frank (Y1)
- Jews in Germany before the Holocaust (Y2)
- A Special Subject (Y3)
- Modules on the new MA Holocaust studies
Later, you will have the opportunity to create your own modules. You will also contribute to the life and administrative running of the History department and Parkes Institute.
You will have a PhD in Modern European Jewish history and expertise in Jewish history and culture. You will demonstrate a commitment to education and an ability to bring your own research to bear on the enhancement of our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. You will teach as part of a team with shared responsibilities for students taking the MA Holocaust as well as modules fully focused on Modern European or Jewish history or including lectures on this subject on a range of History-owned programmes at UG level. We value collegiality and enthusiasm.
You will be an active researcher, in Modern European Jewish history, with recognition at a national level. You will have a research portfolio and well-defined plans for the next REF. You will be able to offer expertise and sector engagement in the development of methodological thinking, and evidence a commitment to research funding, and delivering impactful research. We welcome research collaboration and a keenness for interdisciplinary work.
