British American Tobacco UK has an exciting opportunity for a SENIOR TECHNOLOGIST – ANALYTICAL (MODERN ORAL) in Southampton.
Key Objectives and Expectations:
- Support the execution of Advanced Analytical to deliver Southampton specific robust routine analytical methods to support BAT’s New Categories as part of the Analytical Center of Excellence.
- Accountable for supporting the development of tools, knowledge and data in analytical sciences across all BAT categories.
Direct Impact:
- Providing fast, reliable, end-to-end fit for purpose, accredited analytical data to support BAT’s New Categories product innovation lifecycle and tobacco harm reduction (THR) ambition across key global hubs within the Analytical Center of Excellence (COE), BAT global laboratory network and external third parties.
- Supporting Quality Growth with high quality robust analytical data to enable foundational product understanding, product stewardship, regulatory submissions, competitor analysis and patents.
- Supporting Sustainable Future and tobacco harm reduction (THR) with cutting edge analytical data, enabling regulatory engagement, scientific communications and collaborations.
Core Relationships:
- Internal – All teams across R&S, NC R&D, US S&RD, Global Analytical teams.
- External – Suppliers, CROs, academic and industry consultants.

Travel Required: Infrequent - travel to third party suppliers and conferences.
Your Key Responsibilities:
- Lead in the planning, delivery and reporting of routine analytical and materials testing within the Analytical team based on an agreed plan, equipment and methodologies following best practice.
- Support the Analytical team to develop, deliver and ensure fit-for-purpose testing capabilities and defined requirements to support Quality Growth - product innovation and product lifecycle management (PLM), and Sustainable Future - tobacco harm reduction (THR) sciences and regulatory engagement.
- Ensure that data generated are timely, fit for purpose and meeting the appropriate quality requirements (data standards, RDRT) and business needs, harnessing approaches aligned to the digital transformation roadmap.
- Maintain clear ways of working and adherence to key processes, providing clear technical leadership, maintaining a culture of continuous improvement.
- Support in the authoring and delivery of Research & Science reports, internal publications and presentations. Understand, promote and apply responsibilities under the EH&S policy.
- Application of project management and planning.
- Application of competitor landscape in the field of analytical science.
Experience Required:
- Experience and understanding of a broad range of analytical instruments and techniques (GC-FID, HPLC, HPLC/MS/MS, Karl Fischer, ICP-MS, microscope, compression/tensile and mechanical tests), and laboratory operational and governance requirements.
- Knowledge of product materials and chemical testing.
- Experience and technical knowledge of running, calibrating and maintaining whole aerosol robots/smoking engines.
- Knowledge of applying informatics tools to process and assess analytical data, and meeting appropriate data quality standards.
- Evidence of best practice of analytical approaches in a controlled quality assured environment such as ISO 17025 accredited and/or GxP compliant laboratory.
- Ability to author and deliver R&S technical reports, conference materials and contributions to external peer-reviewed manuscripts.
Technical / Functional / Leadership Skills Required:
- Knowledge of a broad range of analytical techniques for product testing approaches and data interpretation, with good analytical skills and data affinity.
- Analysis of laboratory samples in accordance with approved methods using the LIMS system to maintain traceability of results.
- Knowledge of running, calibrating and maintaining whole aerosol robots/smoking engines.
- Awareness of product, materials and packaging design to enable the development of the appropriate analytical test methods and applications; competent in executing validated/approved methods.
- Timely communication in clear and simple terms to team and internal stakeholders.
- Desire to learn new techniques and develop the appropriate technical competencies to support across the Advanced Analytical team.
- Drives single point of accountability, ability to identify and make suitable interventions to ensure project delivery.
- Track record in delivering independently and across teams to achieve goals and agreed outputs.
- Focused delivery OTIF, leads by example, seizes opportunities to benefit team and R&S.
Education / Professional Qualifications / Certifications Required:
- Relevant professional/academic achievement equivalent to degree level in Chemistry or Materials related science.
