British American Tobacco UK has an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer - Fixed Term 1 Year in Southampton.
What are the key objectives and expectations from this role?
As a R&D Senior Packaging Technologist, you will be supporting the technical delivery of innovative packaging. You will be a key member of the Packaging Deployment team, contributing to the delivery of packaging systems that meet functional, aesthetic, and environmental requirements and working closely with cross-functional teams—mainly across Marketing, Procurement, Ops and R&D (prototyping, pilot manufacturing, testing labs).
This role is ideal for candidates with a background in delivering technical solutions, mainly in injection moulding (writing technical protocols, supporting mould validation, testing, prototyping activities etc). Interpersonal skills, working knowledge of packaging material and conversion process and focus on superior and timely technical execution are essential for this role.
What is the direct impact of this role on the team or organization?
This role will apply expertise in building, mechanical, and scientific principles to collaborate internally and externally and deliver fast innovation.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Lead technical delivery through all stages of injection moulding process implementation, from concept evaluation through commercialization.
- Lead technical delivery of labels (substrate and print).
- Support factory trials.
- Support CFAs, technical discussions with suppliers etc.
What are we looking for?
- Experience of developing packaging components, with focus in injection moulding.
- Experience of using CAD software (Solidworks, AutoCad etc.) and FEMS software (MoldFlow).
- Engineering analysis skills including tolerance analysis, DFA, DFM, DFMEA.
- Knowledge across different packaging materials and conversion techniques.
- Understanding of print techniques and artwork management.
- Effective communication, collaboration, and teamwork, as well as persistence, attention to details, follow through and great collaboration skills working with internal and external parties.
- Strong proven interest to keeping abreast with new trends in packaging materials and sustainability.
- Science, Engineering or other relevant degree, or equivalent experience.
