British American Tobacco UK has an exciting opportunity for an Analytical Scientist II (Nicotine Pouches) in Southampton.

Key Objectives and Expectations:

  • Provide technical direction, execution and delivery of Advanced Analytical to deliver analytical testing capabilities to support BAT’s New Category products, with focus on nicotine pouches.
  • Accountable in supporting the development of tools, knowledge and data in analytical sciences across BAT’s New Category products.

Direct Impact:

  • Providing fast, reliable, end-to-end fit for purpose, accredited analytical data to support BAT’s New Categories product innovation lifecycle and tobacco harm reduction (THR) ambition.
  • Supporting Quality Growth with high quality robust analytical data to enable foundational product understanding, product stewardship, regulatory submissions, competitor analysis and patents.
  • Supporting Sustainable Future and THR with cutting edge analytical data, enabling regulatory engagement, scientific communications and collaborations.

Core Relationships:

  • Internal – All teams across R&S, NC R&D, US S&R&D, Global Analytical teams.
  • External – Suppliers, CROs, academic and industry consultants.

Geographic Scope: Global

Travel Required: Infrequent - travel to third party suppliers and conferences.

Your Key Responsibilities:

  • Application of expert knowledge of routine analytical testing to execute the planning, delivery and reporting within the Analytical team based on an agreed plan, equipment and methodologies following best practice.
  • Input into the technical application of the Analytical team, to develop, deliver and ensure fit-for-purpose analytical testing capabilities and defined requirements to support product innovation, tobacco harm reduction science, and regulatory engagement.
  • Expert knowledge of analytical method development & method validation (including to ISO 17025) and routine deployment, following best practice supported by laboratory quality management systems and key business processes.
  • Initiator or lead representative in interactions with cross-functional teams and internal and 3rd party external technical stakeholders.
  • Ensure that data generated are timely, fit for purpose and meeting the appropriate quality requirements (data standards) and business needs, harnessing approaches aligned to the digital transformation roadmap.
  • Maintain clear ways of working and adherence to key processes, providing clear technical leadership, maintaining a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Author and deliver technical reports, internal and external publications and presentations.
  • Understand, promote and apply responsibilities under the EH&S policy.
  • Application of project management and planning.
  • Monitor the competitor landscape in the field of analytical science.

Experience Required:

  • Strong, recent experience in an analytical testing laboratory.
  • Thorough knowledge and hands-on application of a broad range of analytical instruments and techniques (e.g. GC-MS, HPLC-UV, HPLC/MS/MS), and laboratory operational and governance requirements.
  • Extensive experience, running, maintenance and troubleshooting of a broad range of analytical instruments and establishing best practice.
  • Knowledge of applying informatics tools to process and assess analytical data, and meeting appropriate data quality standards.
  • Experience of best practice of analytical approaches, including method development and validation, in a controlled quality assured environment such as ISO 17025 accredited and/or GxP compliant laboratory.
  • Author and deliver technical reports, conference materials and contributions to external peer-reviewed manuscripts.

Technical / Functional / Leadership Skills Required:

  • Extensive experience of leading high throughput routine analysis, data interpretation and reporting in accordance with approved methods.
  • Experience of quality management systems, integration across different platforms and contribution to the effectiveness of routine analysis.
  • Awareness of product design to enable the development of the appropriate analytical test methods and applications.
  • Leading the delivery of routine analytical approaches to support Quality Growth throughout the product innovation lifecycle.
  • Leading senior stakeholder engagement, developing analytical solutions and generating data, ensuring timely communication in clear and simple terms.
  • Supporting the development of external scientific collaborations to enable analytical method acceptance, and external endorsement supported by established Analytical approaches, via technology transfer and third-party cross-laboratory validation studies.
  • Provision of appropriate technical supervision/coaching to support across the Advanced Analytical team.
  • Adherence to financial process and controls, supporting budget forecasting, planning and tracking spend.
  • Drives single point of accountability, ability to identify and make suitable interventions to ensure project delivery.
  • Track record in delivering independently and across teams to achieve goals and agreed outputs.
  • Focused delivery on-time-in-full (OTIF), leads by example, seizes opportunities to benefit team and function (Research & Science).

Education / Professional Qualifications / Certifications Required:

  • Relevant professional/academic achievement equivalent 1st or 2nd Degree in Chemistry or related science.
  • Relevant society and or professional body membership, e.g., Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), or evidence of proactive continuing professional development.
