A prestigious private estate in Somerset seeks an experienced and proactive Groundsman to join the team. Reporting directly to the Estate Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining the estate grounds to an exceptional standard whilst undertaking a broad range of estate maintenance duties. This is a hands-on role suited to an individual with proven experience working within a private estate environment who takes pride in delivering high standards of presentation, maintenance, and care. Both live-in and live-out arrangements will be considered for the right candidate.
Responsibilities
- Horticulture & Grounds Care:
- Maintenance of formal lawns, paddocks, landscaped areas, and general estate grounds.
- Lawn and turf care including mowing, edging, feeding, aeration, scarification, and seasonal treatments.
- Hedge cutting, pruning, shrub maintenance, and vegetation management.
- Operation of strimmers, brushcutters, hedge cutters, and other grounds maintenance equipment.
- Weed control and management of invasive vegetation.
- Seasonal clearance of leaves, debris, and fallen branches from driveways, pathways, gutters, and communal areas.
- Monitoring plant health and reporting any issues requiring specialist attention.
- Estate Maintenance:
- Maintenance and repair of fencing, gates, dry stone walls, and other estate infrastructure.
- General external repairs and basic DIY tasks across the estate.
- Minor external plumbing repairs and maintenance.
- Drainage maintenance including identifying and clearing blockages.
- Assisting with the upkeep and presentation of outbuildings and ancillary estate structures.
- Machinery Operation & Maintenance:
- Safe operation of ride-on mowers, compact tractors, trailers, and associated attachments.
- Routine servicing, cleaning, and maintenance of machinery and equipment.
- Maintaining records of machinery servicing and reporting any defects.
- Ensuring all tools and equipment are stored securely and maintained to a high standard.
- Estate Support:
- Assisting with wider estate projects as required.
- Supporting the Estate Manager with seasonal and ad hoc maintenance tasks.
- Maintaining a professional, discreet, and trustworthy approach at all times within a private family environment.
Qualifications
- Chainsaw qualifications (NPTC/LANTRA).
- Horticultural qualifications.
- Tractor operation experience.
- Telehandler or machinery certifications.
Requirements
- Minimum 3 years' experience working on a private estate, country house estate, or similar high-end rural property.
- Proven experience in grounds maintenance, horticulture, and estate upkeep.
- Competent in operating and maintaining grounds maintenance machinery.
- Practical DIY and maintenance skills.
- Good understanding of health and safety procedures relating to grounds and machinery.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- High attention to detail and strong work ethic.
- Reliable, discreet, and professional manner.
