The role: Customs & Logistics Compliance Manager

This newly introduced role will be accountable for heading up BA Engineering’s trade compliance activities, reporting to the Commercial Manager – Supply Chain. As the Customs and Logistics Compliance Manager you will directly manage a team of up to 15 people responsible for the import / export of c. 20,000 shipments of aircraft parts and equipment annually. British Airway’s diverse fleet of Airbus and Boeing aircraft result in the need to maintain trade data for a broad product range, exceeding 100,000 SKUs (part numbers), across a supplier base exceeding 1,000 active suppliers. BA holds AEO and CTPAT (US) approvals, moves aircraft parts subject to Strategic Export Controls and ODS licencing and utilises Inward Processing for some imports. The role is additionally accountable for dangerous goods compliance.

The successful candidate will have a track record of successfully managing trade compliance within a medium sized AEO company, be familiar with UK customs law and have experience of interfacing directly with HMRC. A basic understanding of US customs legislation will be advantageous

What you’ll do:

  • Ensure BA (Engineering) is compliant with all legislation relating to the shipment, import and export of goods, including customs, Strategic Export Controls, trade sanctions, Ozone-depleting substances, Fluorinated gas
  • and dangerous goods.
  • Owns Engineering’s procedures relating to the compliant shipment of goods. Ensures these are fit for purpose and updated as required to reflect changes in legislation.
  • Owns all master data relating to the compliant shipment of goods, including commodity codes, country or origin, ECCN, sanctions, dangerous goods etc.
  • Applies for, and maintains, the necessary regulatory approvals and licenses including AEO, CTPAT, OGLs and OIELs etc.
  • Prepares regulatory reports, including FSDs, Inward Processing Discharge, Plastic Packaging Tax, Ozone and F Gas, Export Controls etc.
  • Ensures stakeholders are aware of the relevant procedures and understand the need for compliance.
  • Ensures customs clearance services are in place globally to enable goods to cross international boarders in a timely manner.
  • Ensure cost-effective import customs procedures are employed, balancing the cost of duties and taxes with the administrative burden and compliance risk.
  • Undertake a program of audits to monitor process adherence, addressing route causes should non-compliance be identified.
  • Provide support & advice to the business with regards to logistics compliance and cost effectiveness.
  • Maintain close working relationship with IAG Tax.
  • What you’ll bring to British Airways:

  • Proven ability to work with government/regulators – HMRC and Department for International Trade
  • Able to understand legislation and guidance material and develop compliant company procedures.
  • A proven ability to solve problems and manage on the day operational problems in a timely manner.
  • Leadership – team of between 11 to 15
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Desirable Qualifications

  • Educated to degree level, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a role with accountability for international trade compliance
  • Professional training in Customs / DG / Export Controls a significant advantage
  • Experience of the Aerospace sector a significant advantage
