British Airways Speedbird Pilot Academy is a cadet programme that offers a pathway to a position as a BA pilot upon successful completion of training. Successful candidates will be offered a place at an approved flight training school and, on passing the course, a position as a British Airways pilot.

Selection process

  • Stage 1: Initial Online Testing
  • Stage 2: Flight School Online Testing, In-Person Assessment Centre, Online Interview
  • Stage 3: British Airways In-Person Final Assessment Centre

Timelines: Online Testing mid-June to end of June; In-Person Assessment end of June to early August; Online Interview mid-August to end of August; Final Assessment scheduled mid-September to end of October.

Where you’ll be based: You’ll be based at London Gatwick or London Heathrow.

What you’ll bring: Technical skills are important, but your behaviours as a BA pilot will set you apart. You should demonstrate passion and motivation to excel during the training programme, the ability to remain calm under pressure, and the ability to solve problems. You will need to be an effective team player who can make important decisions in a timely manner.

Your experience and qualifications:

  • You can apply at age 17 but must be aged 18-58 years on 1 January 2027.
  • 6 GCSEs grade A-C or 4-9 including Maths, English Language and a Science or equivalent qualifications. If you have equivalent qualifications, upload certificates for ECCTIS equivalencies.
  • English proficiency required. If applicable, an ICAO Level 6 after training; non-native speakers must have IELTS 5.5 overall with no less than 5.5 in any component (Academic test only).
  • Unrestricted right to live and work in the UK without sponsorship.
  • Valid passport permitting unrestricted worldwide travel.
  • Height between 1.57m (5'2") and 1.91m (6'3"); may require a functionality test if outside range.
  • Visible tattoos on head, face or hands are not permitted.
  • Ability to swim unaided (at least 50 metres) and tread water (at least 3 minutes).
  • Ability to obtain and hold a UK CAA Class 1 medical with no restrictions and meet BA medical criteria.
  • Pre-employment checks and referencing completed to satisfactory standard and satisfactory UK and international Criminal Record Checks.

Note: If you don’t meet the criteria above, your application will not be progressed.
