The Role

The role combines commercial driving with hands-on garage support, including but not limited to shunting/delivering customer trucks, taking vehicles to MOT tests, conducting basic inspections, and helping technicians maintain a safe, clean, and organized workshop.

Key Responsibilities

  • Vehicle Movements: Transporting HGVs (Class 1 or 2) to and from MOT test centres, must have some mechanical skills to understand what is required at the test centre, and be able to make any minor adjustments (e.g. change a bulb).
  • Shunting: Collect/deliver customers vehicles for maintenance and washes.
  • Workshop Support: Assisting technicians, organising parts, managing inventory, and keeping the workshop tidy.
  • Maintenance: Performing tyre checks, and minor adjustments (e.g., changing bulbs).
  • Communication: Must have good communication skills to be comfortable in speaking to DVSA examiners. Also to be comfortable in chasing paperwork from the technicians.
  • Admin: Administrative duties to include ensuring completion of worksheets for the technicians, ensuring all parts included are captured.
  • Parts management: Stock take of parts, ensuring parts are returned to supplier promptly when not required.

What We’re Looking For

  • Licence: A valid UK HGV Class 1. Flexibility with working hours to suit MOT test availability.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: Basic knowledge of mechanics or a strong willingness to learn on the job.
  • Communication: Ability to confidently deal with customers, technicians, and examiners.
  • Proven recent experience as a Commercial Driver with a valid CLASS 1 driving licence.
  • Good communication skills to interact effectively with clients and colleagues and be comfortable in speaking to DVSA examiners.
  • Strong knowledge of road safety regulations and best practices in commercial driving.
  • Good administrative capability to support technicians.
