The Role
To provide on-the-ground operational support to Collections Supervisors by monitoring frontline collection activities, ensuring service standards are met, and promoting safe and efficient working practices across collection crews. The Chargehand acts as the “eyes on the ground,” carrying out inspections, providing real-time feedback, and supporting continuous service improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor frontline collection activities to ensure compliance with operational procedures, service standards and assigned schedules.
- Support the delivery of safe and efficient collection services by promoting compliance with health and safety policies, safe vehicle use and manual handling procedures.
- Conduct operational inspections and checks, including monitoring cleanliness standards, container presentation, contamination and missed collections.
- Provide on-the-job guidance, training and real-time feedback to collection crews, escalating concerns or recurring issues to Supervisors where required.
- Record, report and communicate inspection findings, operational issues and service concerns accurately and in a timely manner using agreed systems and processes.
- Support Supervisors in identifying and implementing operational improvements to enhance service quality, efficiency and compliance.
- Assist with resolving service delivery issues in real time, including missed collections and customer-facing concerns where appropriate.
- Act as a key communication link between frontline crews and Supervisors, supporting effective operational coordination and service continuity.

What We’re Looking For
- Strong observational and reporting skills.
- Ability to communicate clearly and confidently with operational staff.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively while on the road.
- Ability to provide constructive feedback and support to operational crews.
- Class 2 Licence Holder
- Good understanding of collection processes, routes and service standards.
- Awareness of health and safety requirements relevant to collection activities.
- Understanding of operational inspection and reporting processes.
- Awareness of environmental and cleanliness standards relating to collection services.
- Experience working within waste collection or a similar operational environment.
- Experience monitoring operational activity and identifying service issues.
- Experience working collaboratively within frontline operational teams.
- Experience supporting safe and compliant working practices.
