About Buttercliffe Farm by Pasture Restaurant

Buttercliffe Farm is a small but growing farm with big plans for the future. What began as an empty plot seven years ago has grown into a thriving smallholding where we produce seasonal fruit and vegetables, heritage varieties, herbs, and micro herbs for Pasture Bristol, Cardiff and Birmingham restaurants. Everything we grow is done using organic methods, guided by permaculture principles, with a strong focus on working in balance with nature. Four years ago, we planted 3,000 vines as part of a long-term vision to produce our own wine, and in 2025 we proudly harvested our first crop. Alongside expanding what we grow, we’re always working to improve how the farm functions as a whole, caring for the soil, the land, and the wider ecosystem. We also enjoy opening the farm up through occasional farm days, giving people the chance to get stuck in and see how we grow.

About the Role

This is a seasonal role, part-time, from April to September, perfect for someone who loves working outdoors and wants to build a career in market gardening or small-scale food production. You’ll work closely with the team on growing and harvesting produce, as well as helping with the day‑to‑day care and ongoing development of the farm. The work is hands‑on and physical, with eight‑hour days spent outside in all kinds of weather, so you’ll need to be fit, resilient, and happy to muck in. In return, you’ll gain practical experience with organic and no‑dig growing methods and become part of a small, supportive team working towards something we genuinely care about.

Core Duties

  • Planting, propagation, caring for, and maintaining crops in polytunnels, glasshouses, and open fields
  • Supporting vineyard work across our 3,000 grape vines, including pruning, weeding, and harvesting
  • Helping care for our bees – we currently have five hives, with plans to expand (training provided if needed)
  • Growing micro herbs in our on‑site container, including sowing, watering, and harvesting
  • Making and managing compost and caring for soil using mainly hand tools
  • Managing weeds, pests, and diseases using organic methods
  • Harvesting crops carefully and to agreed quality standards
  • Washing, grading, and weighing and recording produce
  • Loading and unloading deliveries and helping transport produce to our restaurants

About You

Our work is varied, rewarding, and based in a beautiful rural setting just outside Bristol, but it does require physical effort, resilience, and attention to detail. We’re looking for someone who enjoys working outdoors, takes pride in their work, and is happy to muck in wherever needed.

Essential

  • Happy doing physical work outdoors in all weathers
  • Hard‑working, reliable, and self‑motivated
  • A genuine interest in sustainable and organic food production
  • Good practical skills and confidence using hand tools
  • Flexible and adaptable, especially during busy seasonal periods
  • Friendly, approachable, and able to work well in a small team

Desirable (but not essential)

  • At least one year’s experience in market gardening or similar food‑growing work
  • Knowledge of regenerative or permaculture‑based growing methods
  • Experience with land management or farm infrastructure (such as fencing or irrigation)
