Job Overview

Full Time, Permanent. Based at 100 Temple Street. Hybrid working available following a successful probation period. This role is part of Bristol City Council’s Welfare Rights and Money Advice Service (WRAMAS) and supports the council’s core duties to its most vulnerable citizens.

What you’ll be doing

You will visit vulnerable citizens at home and other locations across the city to provide a high-quality debt advice service. You will provide consultancy advice to other professionals such as support workers, social workers and housing officers, and manage your own caseload, offering debt advice and a proactive case‑work service to help clients manage their finances, including insolvency outcomes such as Debt Relief Orders.

Typical week

  • On duty for one day a week, triaging incoming referrals over the phone/by email and providing one‑off advice to professionals. On this day you will be office based with a small team of other WRAMAS advisers.
  • Visit clients at home and other locations to conduct initial interviews and gather evidence. Arrange and manage your diary independently.
  • Liaise with creditors, including other council teams.
  • Progress cases to successful resolution, including submitting Debt Relief Order applications.

Less frequently

  • Develop and deliver training to other council teams and commissioned partner organisations.
  • Engage in social policy work, gathering evidence to support consultations and service development.
  • Write articles for the regular newsletter.
  • Attend liaison meetings on behalf of the service.
  • Deliver outreach sessions at community venues across the city.

Qualifications

  • Substantial, recent experience delivering a debt advice service.
  • Good knowledge of debt recovery law and procedures.
  • Good knowledge of the welfare benefits system.
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills, including the ability to converse with vulnerable citizens who have significant communication barriers, negotiate with creditors, and advocate on behalf of clients.
  • Ability to confidently manage and progress own workload.
