Casual Tutor – Bristol Community Learning
Who we’re looking for
Are you passionate about sharing your knowledge of maths and English with adults in your community? Do you have the confidence and empathy to deliver engaging, hands-on courses in welcoming, inclusive environments?
We’re looking for an experienced and reliable Maths and English tutor to join our dynamic Adult & Community Learning team. You will deliver short courses that help adults build confidence, gain practical skills, and take steps towards work, volunteering, or further learning.
This role is ideal for a qualified tutor with a background in adult education, with emphasis on teaching Maths and English – especially someone who understands how to work flexibly and sensitively with adults from a wide range of backgrounds.
About the role
This is more than just a teaching job. You’ll be helping adults gain essential skills in maths and English while building their self-belief and sense of achievement.
You will:
- Deliver short and/or long term maths and English courses (for example, Functional Skills Maths, Functional Skills English, Employability etc) in community venues across Bristol
- Tailor lessons to meet learner needs, using accessible, trauma-informed approaches
- Embed inclusive practice, digital tools and good safeguarding awareness into your teaching
- Promote progression-supporting learners to take further steps in learning, volunteering or employment
- Set clear expectations, model practical skills, and create a safe space for learners to ask questions and practice
- Work closely with development workers, support staff and partner organisations
About the learners
Our learners are adults who may:
- Have few or no formal qualifications
- Be returning to learning after a long break
- Have faced mental health challenges, trauma, addiction, or displacement
- Speak English as an additional language
- Need a welcoming space to build confidence and community
What you’ll need
We welcome people from all backgrounds, especially if you bring lived experience or insight into the challenges our learners face.
You’ll need:
- A recognised teaching qualification (minimum Level 3, such as PTLLS/AET)
- A qualification or experience in maths, English, or a related field.
- Experience of delivering practical maths or English training to adults, ideally in community or outreach settings
- Confidence using digital tools and systems for teaching and communication
- Strong classroom management and communication skills
- A calm, positive and inclusive approach to working with people
- Awareness of trauma-informed practice, safeguarding, equality and health & safety
