An exciting opportunity has emerged for a new Group Accountant role supporting the divisions Economy of Place and Property, Assets & Infrastructure. Economy of Place covers a wide range of council services, from the city’s museums to regeneration, planning, economic development and climate change. In this part of the role you will work closely with managers delivering services to the public, supporting budget monitoring and forecasting, analysing trends, drawing conclusions and making recommendations, and contributing to business cases with a tangible impact on the city.

Property, Assets & Infrastructure includes Corporate Landlord, Waste and Energy. The initial focus of the role is expected to be for up to two days per week supporting the Waste service, which involves the client function for the council’s waste collection and disposal services. Upcoming transformation projects include improvements to recycling, procurement of a new fleet, depot re‑organisation and re‑contracting for core service provision. You will help secure value for money for these services. You will be the trusted advisor to senior members of the Council on financial matters, setting annual budgets, ensuring robust short, medium and long‑term forecasts, identifying, analysing and reporting on the financial implications of new initiatives, and supporting the preparation of annual statements at year‑end.

Key responsibilities

  • Budget setting and monitoring for Economy of Place and Property, Assets & Infrastructure divisions.
  • Financial forecasting and scenario analysis for new and existing initiatives.
  • Preparation of annual statements and financial reporting.
  • Advice and support to senior council members on financial matters.
  • Continuous improvement of financial processes and efficiency.
  • Participation in cross‑cutting projects across the Council.

Required qualifications and experience

  • Fully qualified or part‑qualified CCAB accountant (or equivalent) or in the process of obtaining one.
  • Experience analysing, interpreting and presenting financial management information to those who manage budgets.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to establish excellent working relationships with colleagues and customers.
  • Commitment to continual improvement and the ability to propose efficiencies.
