About the Role
Permanent, Full Time (job share is available). An exciting opportunity has arisen for family support workers to join the children in care teams, in our Through Care Service, which supports children and young people aged 0–25 and their families through their journey in care and as care leavers. The service consists of 11 teams, including three focused on care leavers and seven children in care teams comprising a practice lead, five social workers, two family support workers and a unit coordinator. You will be part of a larger group of 14 family support workers and will have the additional support of a senior family support worker. The role is varied and central to building and maintaining relationships with children, families and networks.
Responsibilities
- Supervise family time between children and their families, facilitating happy and positive memories.
- Transport children from their carers’ homes to family time venues and back, using company pool cars.
- Help children understand their journey into and through care, creating a narrative with children and their network.
- Respond to reactive, fast‑paced situations where children or families may be sad or angry.
- Provide support to parents to improve the quality of family time, analysing what went well and finding alternative ways when it did not.
- Support social workers in their role working with children, carers, birth families and professionals.
- Work flexibly, independently and respond to changing demands, challenging young people, professionals and families in a calm and assertive manner.
- Prepare to work beyond 5 pm on some days for after‑school family times and manage own diary to take back any time accrued.
- Maintain a high standard of written work and IT capabilities, demonstrating a good understanding of the needs of the children and families.

- Excellent communication skills and the ability to form and maintain relationships with children and families.
- Ability to work flexibly, independently and in a high‑pressure environment.
- Willingness to travel to see and support children across the city and further afield.
- High standard of written work and IT capabilities.
- Enhanced DBS Check required.
