Bristol Cathedral is looking to recruit a Bass Choral Scholar starting in September 2026.
The four Choral Scholars form a vital part of the ten-strong back row in the Cathedral’s highly acclaimed and respected choir, which has been in existence since at least 1542.
The choir has recently toured Sweden and performed live on BBC Radio 3, and enjoys a busy schedule, performing music from all periods of history and in a wide range of styles.
If you have experience and a love of liturgical choral singing and are a gifted singer with good sight-reading skills, we’d be very pleased to hear from you.
Commitments
- Attend designated rehearsals, services and concerts as per the Choir Diary.
- Maintain a high level of commitment to our schedule.
- Engage in one weekday service (currently Mondays, 4:45pm – 6:00pm) and both Sunday choral services (Sundays, 9:15am – 11:15am & 2:45pm – 4:30pm).
- Follow the choir term schedule aligned with Bristol Cathedral Choir School terms and religious holidays, ending Christmas, Easter, and in July respectively.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Showcase exceptional vocal and sight-reading abilities.
- Perform and rehearse alongside our professional Lay Clerks.
- Possess a strong musical background with choral singing experience.
- Ability to work well in a team.
- Availability for rehearsals and services.
- Enrolment in a degree programme preferred but not mandatory.
- Year 1:£2,685 per annum
- Year 2:£3,226 per annum
- Year 3:£3,767 per annum
Consistent remuneration for a four-year degree.
- Opportunities for extra compensation by substituting for absent Lay Clerks.
- Access to professional singing lessons, the costs for which are covered by the Cathedral.
