The Custodial Services Working Supervisor oversees daily custodial operations while actively performing custodial duties alongside staff. This position is responsible for supervising team members, ensuring quality standards are met, and maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and overall appearance of assigned facilities. The Working Supervisor leads by example and participates directly in routine and specialized cleaning tasks.

This position will report to Norfolk Naval Shipyard and may occasionally require night or weekend work.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate custodial staff
  • Assign daily tasks and adjust workloads as needed
  • Monitor work performance to ensure quality and safety standards are met
  • Conduct routine inspections of facilities
  • Provide coaching, corrective guidance, and performance feedback
  • Coordinate schedules, shift coverage, and timekeeping
  • Ensure compliance with safety procedures and proper chemical handling
  • Order and manage inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment
Working / Hands‑On Responsibilities
  • Perform routine custodial duties including cleaning restrooms, offices, hallways, and common areas
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and disinfect surfaces
  • Perform floor care tasks including stripping, waxing, burnishing, scrubbing, and carpet extraction
  • Operate and maintain cleaning equipment such as auto scrubbers, buffers, and extractors
  • Assist with deep cleaning projects and event setup/cleanup
  • Fill in for absent staff as needed to maintain service levels
  • Report maintenance issues and safety hazards promptly
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • 5 years of supervisory custodial experience
  • Knowledge of custodial best practices, floor care techniques, and safety regulations
  • Ability to operate and train staff on custodial equipment
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem‑solving skills
  • Ability to balance supervisory duties with hands‑on physical work
  • Basic computer skills for scheduling and reporting
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform extended periods of standing, bending, and equipment operation
Additional Qualifying Factors

As a condition of employment, you will be required to pass a pre‑employment drug screening (post accepted offer) and have acceptable background check results. If applicable to the contract, you must also obtain the appropriate clearance levels required and be able to obtain access to military installations.

Necessary Physical Requirements

The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. This position requires the ability to maneuver around work sites, see, hear, and verbally communicate with co‑workers and clients. Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for bending, stooping, sitting, walking or standing for prolonged periods of time; frequent opportunity to move about and to work outside the office environment for extended periods involving exposure to the elements with weather that will include extreme heat, cold, wind, rain or other inclement weather, walking over rough and uneven surfaces, and routine lifting of up to 35 pounds. If required, must properly use personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times including but not limited to: hard hats, steel toed boots, eye protection, respiratory protection, and hearing protection. Must always maintain a constant state of mental alertness.

Working Conditions

Job is performed in a combination of office and outdoor site locations. The office setting includes exposure to computer screens and requires extensive use of a computer, keyboard, and mouse. Outdoor settings include walking, driving, and carrying supplies throughout all seasons with exposure to heat and cold conditions, and potentially wildlife. Is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and loud noise.
