Brightwork are delighted to be supporting a key client as they continue through an exciting period of growth. Due to continued expansion, we are seeking an experienced Payroll Assistant Manager to join their established and highly regarded payroll team.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced payroll professional looking to take the next step in their career within a collaborative and supportive environment. The successful candidate will combine strong technical payroll expertise with the ability to support, coach and oversee the work of colleagues while managing a varied client portfolio.
The Role
As a Payroll Assistant Manager, you will be responsible for the end-to-end delivery of payroll services across a portfolio of clients, ensuring payrolls are processed accurately, compliantly and within agreed timescales.
Alongside payroll processing responsibilities, you will play a key role in supporting the day-to-day operation of the team, reviewing work, providing technical guidance, helping to resolve complex client queries and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Managing a portfolio of payroll clients and processing payrolls from start to finish
Reviewing payroll work to ensure accuracy, compliance and timely delivery
Supporting and guiding Payroll Advisors, Analysts and Assistants with technical and operational queries
Monitoring team workloads and assisting with the allocation and prioritisation of work
Providing feedback, coaching and support to help develop team capability
Handling complex payroll queries and researching technical payroll issues
Keeping up to date with changes in payroll legislation and implementing required process updates
Delivering training and sharing technical knowledge with the wider payroll team
Maintaining accurate client process manuals and payroll documentation
Supporting payroll system enhancements, testing and process improvement projects
Building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, stakeholders and professional advisors
Ensuring compliance with payroll legislation, internal controls and audit requirements
Reviewing and submitting BACS payments in accordance with company procedures
Identifying opportunities to improve client service and internal processes
About You
To be successful in this role, you will have:
Previous experience in a senior payroll position with responsibility for end-to-end payroll processing
Experience managing multiple payrolls and working to strict deadlines
Experience supporting, mentoring or supervising colleagues within a payroll environment
Strong knowledge of UK payroll legislation, statutory payments and payroll compliance
Experience managing a client portfolio, ideally within a bureau or accountancy practice environment
Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail
Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities
Confident communication skills and the ability to build relationships at all levels
A proactive and customer-focused approach
Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
Experience using IRIS, STAR or BrightPay payroll software is essential
Relevant payroll qualifications would be advantageous
