We are seeking a Head of IT Operations to build and run the engine room of the council. This role is responsible for ensuring that every system, device, network and service just works reliably, securely and at scale. From infrastructure and cloud platforms to end‑user computing and frontline support, you will create a high‑performing, modern operational service. You’ll lead the transformation of our live services: embedding strong service management disciplines, improving user experience, and modernising legacy environments – all while ensuring day‑to‑day stability across a complex and busy organisation. This is a high‑impact leadership role where your decisions will directly affect thousands of staff and critical public services every day. We are looking for someone who can elevate the organisation, build the team their way, set the standard for excellent performance and deliver outcomes people notice and care about.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive the strategy and day‑to‑day operations of IT infrastructure, cloud platforms, and end‑user computing.
- Transform live services by embedding service management disciplines and modernising legacy environments.
- Build, mentor and lead a high‑performing IT operations team.
- Ensure reliability, security and scalability of all systems, devices, networks and services.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to align IT services with the council’s strategic priorities.
Qualifications
Qualifications and experience are required that demonstrate the ability to lead and transform IT services at a senior level. We look for:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Extensive experience (typically 10+ years) in IT operations and infrastructure management.
- Proven track record of leading large, cross‑functional teams and delivering complex technology transformations.
- Strong knowledge of service management frameworks and modernisation of legacy systems.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to influence senior stakeholders.
