Central Hub Brighton is the SEMH specialist provision for the city consisting of Brighton and Hove Pupil Referral unit, Primary and Middle School, The Connected Hub and the Treehouse (based at Fairlight Primary School) and has three bases across the city. We have good links with other educational organisations in the city. We’re looking for a committed, compassionate, and skilled teacher to join our dedicated team, supporting young people through a trauma‑informed, attachment‑aware approach.

Part‑time: 32 hours per week
Paid weeks per year: 47.36 (inclusive of holiday entitlement)
Fixed term until: 31 August 2027 in the first instance
Start date: 1 September 2026

About the Role
Due to the further expansion of Central Hub Brighton Middle School, we seek a Higher level Teaching Assistant to support the work of teachers and take responsibility for agreed learning activities under an agreed system of supervision. Experience of working with Autistic and/or SEMH pupils will be an advantage. The role will involve planning, preparing and delivering learning activities for individuals or small groups, or short‑term cover for whole classes (maximum 8 pupils). There is potential for the management and development of a specialist area within the school and management of other teaching assistants including allocation and monitoring of work, appraisal and training. We have a trauma‑informed, relational approach to working with our young people and foster a supportive and collaborative environment.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Supporting Pupils
    • Assess the needs of pupils and use detailed knowledge and specialist skills to support pupils' learning
    • Work with teachers and the SENCO to develop and implement IEPs
    • Get to know pupils as individuals and tailor your support to help them flourish
    • Develop and deliver Individual Education Plans (IEPs)
    • Be a positive role model, setting high expectations and encouraging confidence
    • Foster an inclusive, welcoming classroom where every child feels valued
    • Encourage independence, teamwork and active participation
    • Recognise and celebrate progress
  • Supporting teaching and learning
    • Help plan and deliver engaging learning activities for individuals, groups or whole classes
    • Monitor progress and provide clear, constructive feedback against pre‑determined learning objectives
    • Track and record achievements to support pupil development
    • Manage behaviour confidently, promoting self‑regulation and respect
    • Contribute to meetings with parents and carers, sharing meaningful updates
    • Prepare lesson materials, resources and assessments
    • Administer progress assessments and tests
  • Supporting the Curriculum
    • Adapt activities to meet pupils’ needs in real time
    • Use technology creatively to develop pupil’s competence and enhance learning
    • Select and prepare resources that reflect pupils’ interests, language and cultural backgrounds
    • Support the use of specialist equipment and learning tools
  • Supporting the School Community
    • Comply with and assist with the development of policies and procedures
    • Work collaboratively with staff, families and external agencies
    • Contribute to safeguarding, wellbeing and inclusion for all pupils
    • Support and lead extracurricular and off‑site learning experiences
  • Line Management Responsibilities (where applicable)
    • Lead and support other teaching assistants
    • Coordinate workloads and provide guidance
    • Take part in recruitment, training and mentoring
    • Represent support staff in meetings and discussions
