Are you a qualified Anatomical Pathologist Technician looking for a new opportunity to care for the deceased and bereaved across Sussex? Do you have a positive outlook with high levels of personal resilience and emotional intelligence to deal with challenging situations? You’ll join a small, dedicated and supportive team of mortuary professionals working with Pathologists, HM Coroners and emergency services to deliver a best practice service. In addition to your work in the mortuary, you will attend scenes of death with colleagues—providing the HM Coroner’s body collection provision by removing bodies from the scene.
About the role: As an Anatomical Pathology Technologist at Brighton & Hove City Council, you will be responsible for the safe custody and release of deceased persons retained at the mortuary, assist Pathologists in completing autopsy examinations and support the operation of the HM Coroner’s body collection provision in the city. You work alongside the Lead Anatomical Pathology Technologist and Mortuary and Coroner Support Manager to ensure Brighton and Hove’s mortuary provisions meet the highest possible standards and comply with the HTA’s licensing requirements.
The post-holder must have obtained either an RSPH Certificate and Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology or a Level 3 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology.
Key duties include:
- Admission, identification and safe storage of deceased bodies for post‑mortem examination
- Preparing and facilitating viewings of the deceased
- Attending scenes of death to transport the deceased to the mortuary
This role requires frequent exposure to highly distressing and emotive situations, periods of intense physical activity, and the willingness to work out of hours on a rota basis.

Your starting salary will be pro rata if the position is less than 37 hours or term-time only. Please note that this post is subject to a Basic Disclosure Criminal Records Check.
