Theatre Technician (Zero-hours)

Location: Brighton

Salary: £15.32 per hour, inclusive of holiday pay

Brighton College are seeking to a Theatre Technician on a zero-hour basis.

Main Purpose of the Role: The Theatre Technician will work with the Performing Arts Team,
alongside all teaching and support staff teams to support the technical provision within
performing arts.

Role Summary: The Theatre Technician plays a key role within the Performing Arts Team supporting the Performing Arts departments and other users of the Richard Cairns Building with the technical resources needed for their events. The ideal candidate will be someone with a passion for theatre and a keen interest in all aspects of technical theatre but with experience in either lighting, sound, or stage management.

General Duties and Responsibilities:

Technical Delivery

  • Provide the necessary technical support for events and performances;
  • Support the curriculum delivery with regards to technical provision;
  • Support in the rigging and operation of all lighting, sound, AV and stage equipment.

Performances and Events

  • Ensure the effective delivery of all performances and events in the theatre including assemblies, pupil lessons, events, and performances;
  • Provide all necessary theatrical resources to visiting users of the space;
  • Take on a proportion of duty manager shifts when required.

Relationships with other teams

  • Work closely with the Performing Arts Team;
  • Attend departmental meetings hosted by the Performing Arts Technical and Facilities Manager;
  • Provide creative input into the Arts Programme planning processes, offering appropriate advice and support to the artistic team.

Operations of the Theatre

  • Keep consistently high standards of facilities in all technical areas of the theatre building;
  • Support in the maintenance and repairs of technical equipment;
  • Support the Head of Technical and Production in organising the technical equipment of the department;
  • Cover a wide range of Front of House and Back of House roles within the Theatre.

Performance Duties

  • Take on a wide range of roles over the year on performance elements;
  • Source props needed for productions.

Person Specifications
The successful candidate will have experience in the following areas:

  • Formal technical theatre training or qualified by experience of working in a technical theatre department;
  • Good knowledge of lighting, sound and staging equipment and practice;
  • Excellent problem solving, fault-finding and decision-making skills;
  • Interest in and passion for the arts;
  • Enthusiasm and calmness;
  • Ability to work at heights, lift bulky and heavy lighting and technical equipment as well as having good manual dexterity for operating equipment;
  • Good communication skills including a good standard of spoken and written English;
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety legislation and procedures within technical theatre.

Hours of Work
This is an all-year round (52 weeks) appointment on a zero hour basis. The services you provide to the College will be on an ad-hoc basis. This means that whilst the College will try to give you as much notice as possible when offering work, there is no obligation on the part of the College to provide such work nor for you to accept any work offered.
Further discussions will take place at interview regarding availability of ad-hoc hours.

Remuneration
£15.32 per hour, inclusive of holiday pay.

Holidays
Holiday entitlement is included in the hourly pay rate for this role.
