Brighton College is seeking to appoint a Teacher of Design and Technology to start in August 2026.
The Design and Technology department at Brighton College is renowned for its creativity, innovation and technical excellence. Facilities include a purpose-built, fully furnished CAD/CAM suite with six 3D printers, a large CNC router, mill and lathe, a design studio, and a high-quality workshop with plasma cutting, waterjet cutting and machining equipment. Yearly investment in tools, equipment and materials supports pupils to problem solve, design, and develop unique and forward-thinking products. The department currently offers D&T across Years 7 & 8 (optional in Year 9) with strong uptake, GCSE OCR D&T, and A-Level OCR Product Design. The department runs clubs such as Greenpower, Robotics and a Repair Cafe, and has had success in Design Ventura, Young Artisan competitions and Arkwright scholars. The team consists of four staff members (three teachers and a full-time technician). The department promotes professional development and collaboration, and has achieved strong GCSE and A-Level results. A yearly trip to Italy to visit Lamborghini and Ducati factories and ongoing efforts to broaden pupils’ experiences outside the classroom are part of our approach.
There are opportunities for continuous professional development and a culture of collaborative teamwork to support both staff and pupils.
The successful candidate will teach a range of DT classes across the College age range, from Year 7 to A-level. They should be enthusiastic and passionate about teaching Product Design, with extensive subject knowledge and specialist practical experience. We are interested in applications from a range of DT specialisms (electronics or engineering, for example) as we look to expand the subject specialisms offered.
Additionally, all teachers at Brighton College are expected to contribute to the school’s pastoral system, generally as a tutor in one of our 16 houses (six boarding, ten day). There is also an expectation that all teachers contribute to the co-curricular life of the school, through the extensive Games programme and/or leadership of one of over 100 school societies. Applicants are encouraged to point to interests and enthusiasms as part of their application. Staff have the opportunity to contribute to the Masterclass programme—a series of weekly lessons celebrating learning across personal academic or cultural interests (examples include Magical Realism, Cuisine and Culture and Great Debates in History).
All teachers joining Brighton College will have the benefit of guidance from an experienced mentor during probation, followed by ongoing professional development throughout their time at the College.
